Women's Basketball— Cornerstone University's women's basketball posted a win and a loss last week.
At home on Wednesday night, the Golden Eagles fell to Siena Heights 53-46. The tight first half saw five ties and nine lead changes with Siena Heights eventually taking a 29-27 lead into the locker room. Cornerstone did grab a 37-36 second half edge before Siena turned up the defense to salt away the victory. CU's Ashley Niedermayer produced a game-high 11 rebounds.
At Detroit on Saturday, Cornerstone picked up their second conference win of the season -- 64-40 over the Mustangs from Marygrove College. Cornerstone held Marygrove to just four of 24 from the field during the half -- riding an 11 point lead, 26-15, into halftime. During the second half, the Golden Eagles continued to separate themselves from the Mustangs. Senior co-captain Robyn Veltkamp led all scorers with 19 points.
Following the week, Cornerstone improves to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play as they prepare to face two conference opponents on Wednesday and Saturday. Wednesday the Golden Eagles host Lawrence Tech at 5:30 p.m. before travelling to Livonia on Saturday to face Madonna University at 1 p.m.
Men's Basketball— The No. 15 Golden Eagles' men's basketball team went undefeated last week in two outings.
On Wednesday against Siena Heights, a 12-0 run late in the first half gave Cornerstone a 44-30 halftime advantage on their way to an 88-60 victory. The Golden Eagles shot 51.5% from the field and 63.6% from behind the three-point arc. Ty Mason led all players on the night with 18 points.
On Saturday at Marygrove College, the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 12-5 lead and extended the margin to 37-29 at the half en route to an 80-71 win. Jake Plite recorded his first double-double of the season scoring 11 points to go alongside 13 rebounds.
After the week, Cornerstone improves its record to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in league play while Jake Plite receives WHAC Player of the Week honors. Looking ahead, Cornerstone plays two conference opponents this week. On Wednesday, the Golden Eagles host Lawrence Tech at 7:30 p.m. then travel to Livonia to take on No. 24 Madonna University at 3 p.m.
