Volleyball - Tue, Sep. 11, 2012
Cornerstone and Aquinas meet in each team's first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletics Conference volleyball match of the 2012 campaign, Wednesday at 7 p.m. at AQ's Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center.
The Golden Eagles (3-1) have been able to rest and recuperate since their last match on August, 25. Since the 2005 season, the Cornerstone squad has a winning record of 5-2 in opening matches against WHAC foes. In the last seven seasons, Cornerstone has never opened WHAC play against Aquinas but they look to continue their winning record on Wednesday.
Soaring with the Eagles
The Golden Eagles squad has been able to nurse and recover injuries from their last matches at the UM-Dearborn Earlybird Collegiate Challenge on Aug. 24 and 25. In the challenge, they competed in four matches and posting wins against Indiana University-South Bend, Georgetown College, and Trinity Christian College. Their only loss of the weekend came from nationally ranked Point Park College (3-1).
Cornerstone ranks sixth nationally in assists per game (12.490) and eleventh in kills per game (13.690). Individually, Kim Weaver ranks fourth nationally leads the WHAC in assists per game (11.500). Abby Miedema is currently 36th in the nation and second in the WHAC with (5.060) digs per game.
Scouting the Saints
Aquinas brings a 3-3 record into Wednesday's match. Aquinas is coming off a 3-2 win over Indiana University-South Bend on Saturday, Sept. 8. With losses coming from Mount Mercy, Trinity Christian, and Judson, Aquinas looks to continue their winning streak from Saturday against Cornerstone.
Both teams have faced Indiana University-South Bend and Trinity Christian during the 2012 season. Cornerstone was able to beat both these opponents as Aquinas came up empty handed and was swept by common opponent, Trinity Christian.
Under head coach Ryan Campbell, the Golden Eagle squad holds a 2-5 record against Aquinas in volleyball. Cornerstone was able to notch their first win, for Campbell, against the Saints last season on September 24. Following the win, Cornerstone was able to win another just four days later. Campbell and the Golden Eagles look to continue their win streak against Aquinas on Wednesday.
