The Cornerstone Volleyball team started their WHAC play with a 3-0 sweep over host Aquinas College (25-14, 25-20, 25-19) on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles advance to 1-0 in the conference and 4-1 overall. The Saints fall to 0-1 in the conference and 3-4 overall.
Cornerstone blasted Aquinas in set one, 25-14, highlighting Abby Miedema's ace to give Cornerstone set one. Cornerstone totaled a team 17 kills in the opening set while Aquinas had a .143 attack percentage.
In the second set, the Golden Eagles had to play comeback. The Saints took the early lead in set two making the score 6-2. Aquinas led for most of the second set but with the score, 15-9, in favor of Aquinas, Cornerstone was not going to give up. The Golden Eagles were able to rally and tie the set 20-20 and did not look back after, with the final 25-20 in favor of Cornerstone.
The Golden Eagles rode their momentum into the third set and took control from the very beginning and continuing their way till the end. Cornerstone continued their dominate attack with 14 kills in the last set while Aquinas tallied 9 kills.
Leading the Way
Kim Weaver tallied 5 kills, added 36 assists and 8 digs. Becky Albrecht Posted a team-high kills, hitting .588, while connecting for 12 kills. Abby Miedema collected a team-high 24 digs and Murphy Heyer entered double-figures with 10 digs.
Cornerstone begins its participation at the Olivet Nazarene Tournament this weekend in Bourbonnais, Illinois. The Golden Eagles take on Embry-Riddle, Campbellsville, Trevecca Nazarene, and Georgetown on Friday and Saturday.
