The Golden Eagles
started off with a fury today in their WHAC Semifinal against Aquinas.
Cornerstone got on the scoreboard just 1:10 into the game when Maile Carigon
hit a screamer from about 16 yards out that hit off the inside of the left post
and into the goal. The Golden Eagles had a couple more good chances in
the next 10 minutes but they did strike again in the 11th minute when Jen
Kuipers knocked in a ball that was headed back into the goal area by Heidi
DeVries. The Golden Eagles maintained that 2-0 lead through the remainder
of the 1st half. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Saints 10-1 in the 1st
half of play.
Aquinas came out in the 2nd half and dictated the
play from the kickoff and they pulled to 2-1 when Jaime Tomaszewski hit a long
shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced off the ground and back
into the top of the net. Aquinas kept
pressing over the next 10 minutes but couldn't get the equalizer. Cornerstone then made it 3-1 when Ashleigh
Lund pounced on a ball in front of the goal and buried it in the back of the
net. The Saints kept battling and pulled
another back in the 75th minute on another Jaime Tomaszewski
goal. The Golden Eagles continued to try
to polish off the game but it went back and forth. Aquinas had a great chance to tie it in the
last few minutes but Alyssa Morrow ended up making a save to preserve the
win. The Saints out-shot Cornerstone
11-7 in the 2nd half.
Cornerstone improves to 11-6-1 on the year and advances to play in the
WHAC Tournament final on Saturday against Siena Heights (2-1 winner over
Davenport). That game will be played at
1:00 at #1 Seed Cornerstone.
