Game 1- Cornerstone University vs. Iowa Wesleyan
After a day of rest, Cornerstone University took the field
against the Lions of Iowa Wesleyan University. The Golden Eagles started off
strong offensively scoring two runs in the first inning. Tahni Bruno singled up
the middle and scored on Heidi Warmelink's ground ball to third. Warmelink
reached base on an error and scored on Lisa Peppel's base hit. Madison Bucilla
pitched her first complete game of the season for the Golden Eagles. Although
Cornerstone struggled defensively committing six errors, Bucilla pitched a
solid game and well enough for the Golden Eagles to be successful. Offensively,
the Golden Eagles were beyond stellar. The Golden Eagles finished with 18 hits
and 15 runs. Jessica Kuhlman led the team with four R.B.I's, Tahni Bruno
led the team with four hits and both Madison Bucilla and Heidi Warmelink led
the Golden Eagles with three runs scored each. Bucilla contributed three hits,
while Kuhlman, Warmelink, and Lauren Pasciak all added two hits, and Lisa
Peppel, Dinah Gruppen, Stefanie Leet and Rachel Gruppen all had a base hit a
piece. The final score was 15-7.
Game 2- Cornerstone University vs. Purdue North Central
For the second time of the spring trip, Cornerstone faced
the Panthers of Purdue North Central. Again in the first inning, the Golden
Eagles jumped on the opportunity they were given to score first. Jessica
Kuhlman drew a lead off walk to begin the inning. Heidi Warmelink set
the tone of the game with a home run to left center. The second
inning was also a strong offensive inning. Rachel Gruppen led off the inning
with a single. Kuhlman then singled and moved Gruppen to third. Tahni
Bruno then sucided squeezed Gruppen into home and reached base on an error.
Bruno's bunt moved Kuhlman to third. Lisa Peppel then drove in both
Kuhlman and Bruno with a base hit. Defensively, the Golden Eagles stuggled
again. Cornerstone finished with five errors. Warmelink took the mound for the
Golden Eagles and held the Panthers to one run until the bottom of the seventh.
The Panthers scored three runs on one error. Along with Madison Bucilla in game
one, Warmelink pitched beyond expectations and put her team in a position to
win. Rachel Gruppen led the Golden Eagles with two hits, Warmelink and Peppel
both led the team with two R.B.I.'s, and Kuhlman led the team with two runs
scored. Kuhlman, Bruno, Warmelink, Peppel, and Creager all contributed one hit
a piece. The final score was 7-4.
