The annual Alumni match was played on Saturday, August 20th at 7:00 p.m. The Varsity have had a great run the past 14 seasons having gone undefeated since 1998, but this year they experienced a bit of setback as the Alumni defeated them 2-1. The game was played in ideal weather and beautiful field conditions. The Alumni squad was a bit depleted in numbers but stalwart players Steve Herdsman, Layne Kreh, Luke Miller, Aaron Lamport, Kern Matthews, Joel Strehl, Bruce Pobocik, Brent Grube, Brad Verburg and Justin Breckan formed a solid backbone to compliment the young legs of Zac McCabe, Matt Kunnen, Dave DeBoer, Ian Grotenhuis and Nic Tolsma.
After going down 1-0 on freshman Diego Bobadilla's early goal, the Varsity squad could not manage to take advantage of a couple of scoring opportunities. The overall quality of play was high for both sides. The Golden Eagle Alums stormed back with two goals by game MVP Brad Verburg. "This was a really great occasion today to have former players back here with us and a good opportunity for our players to meet with the older players whose footsteps they are following in" says Coach Bell.
The Alumni match was also used to show our support for US troops in Afghanistan, especially former Golden Eagle Dan Kerstan (Chicago, IL). The team wore camo jerseys to show Dan that our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this time that he is stationed overseas. Dan played in the goal for the Golden Eagles in 2008 and 2009 seasons.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Monday, Aug 22nd as they play their last exhibition game of the preseason vs. Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo at 3pm.
