[Men's Basketball] Caleb Kigar Signs with Men�s Basketball

Forest Hills Eastern star Caleb Kigar recently signed his Letter of Intent to play basketball at Cornerstone University next season. The 6-5 forward finished his senior year at Eastern by averaging 14 PPG. He was named the OK Bronze All-Conference team for his efforts. Kigar, who also earned Honorable Mention All-Area honors as well, averaged a team-high 7 RPG to go along with his 1.3 steals/game.

Kigar helped lead his team to a 14-7 mark overall and a second place finish in the OK Bronze with a 8-2 record. He scored a career-high 29 points against Northpointe Christian on January 29.

Kigar was also very successful in the classroom where he maintained a 3.6 GPA. He was on the Honor Roll at FHE every semester and was also a National Honor Society member both as a junior and a senior.

Caleb on why he chose Cornerstone: "I've been following Cornerstone athletics for all my life. I've attended numerous camps in my younger years and countless games. Now the chance to be a part of the team that I've watched is unfathomable. I am so grateful for this opportunity. I've been seeking the Lord's guidance ever since I've started submitting applications and after wise counsel and family input, I felt led to sign on with Cornerstone and continue my education there."

Coach Elders on Caleb: "Caleb is terrific young man. He's a class act both on and off the court. It's great to see how he's developed into a good basketball player since coming to our camps a few years back. Caleb is a very hard worker and he knows how to compete. We're excited that he has chosen Cornerstone to further his education and to play basketball.

Kigar, who is undecided on a major at this point, is the son of Kurt and Jennifer Kigar.

[Men's Basketball] Zeeland East Standout Signs with the Golden Eagles

Ty Smith, a two-sport standout at Zeeland East High School, recently signed his Letter of Intent to play basketball for Cornerstone University. Smith, a 6-4 forward, helped his team to an 18-4 record this past season. An All-Conference performer, Smith averaged 10 PPG and 8 RPG while leading the Chix to an OK Black championship as a senior. The two-year starter was voted the team's Best Defensive Player and was also named as the Chix Character Award winner for the 12-13 season. Smith, who served as captain of his team, had a season-high 21 points versus Grand Rapids Union on February 20.

Smith was also a key player on Zeeland East football team last fall. A two-way player, Smith played both tight end and defensive end while earning All-Conference honors as well. He helped his team capture the OK Black Conference championship and a #1 rating in Division 3. The Chix finished the season at 9-1.

Equally successful in the classroom, Smith maintained an impressive 3.7 GPA at ZE. He has been a National Honor Society member the last three years. Smith has also been very active outside of school - going on two mission's trips, teaching Sunday School and serving as a small group leader in his church. He has also been a volunteer at the Hope Bus, where he has served food to the needy.

Smith on why he chose Cornerstone: "I chose Cornerstone because I liked the atmosphere and feel of Cornerstone and its coaches. I also felt God pulling me there."

Coach Elders on Ty: "Ty is a workhorse. Nobody plays the game harder than he does. He's a tough, physical player who loves to do all the dirty work. Ty is an outstanding defender and is relentless on the boards. Ty is a class individual and a great fit for our basketball program."

Smith will be majoring in Education at Cornerstone. He is the son of Steve and Cindy Smith.

[Men's Basketball] Cornerstone Signs Doornbos Brothers

Kevin and Kyle Doornbos recently decided to further their education at Cornerstone University and play basketball as well. The twins will follow in the footsteps of their brother Alan who played soccer at CU from 2080-10. The twins prepped at nearby South Christian High School.

Both three-sport athletes, Kevin and Kyle were All-Conference, All-Regional and All-State players on SCHS State Championship soccer team last fall. Kyle was named 1^st Team All-State and Kevin earned 3^rd Team All-State honors for the champion Sailors. They both served as captains on the team.

The Doornbos brothers also played basketball this past winter and led their team to a 12-10 record and a second place finish in the OK Gold Conference. They scored 8 PPG and 4 PPG respectively. The two guards also led their team in steals and assists this past season.

Kevin and Kyle are currently playing baseball at South Christian.

"We're excited that Kevin and Kyle have chosen to come to Cornerstone University. They're quality young men and are a great fit for our university and basketball program," says Coach Kim Elders.

[Men's Basketball] Golden Eagles not selected for NAIA Tournament

The Golden Eagles missed out on the 32 team field for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament. Three teams out of the WHAC were selected (Madonna - automatic berth for winning the WHAC tournament, Davenport - automatic berth for winning the WHAC regular season, and Lourdes received an the last At-Large berth for the tournament. Cornerstone finished the season with a 21-11 record. Coach Elders finished the season with 499 wins so will have to wait for next season to join the 500 win club.

Cornerstone made just 2-11 from long range in the 2^nd half and OT periods and Davenport made just 22-40 shots from the foul line in the game.

GAME FLOW

Derek Kingshott made a layup with 18:58 for the first points of the game and Justin Pepper made it 4-2 with 18:13 on the clock. The both teams went scoreless for the next 2:17 until Shane Moreland drained a 3-pointer with 15:56 on the clock to put CU up 7-4. Neither team could really get it going early on in the first half. The Golden Eagles held a 10-8 lead with 13:01 left in the half. The Panthers made a 8-2 run to take a 18-12 lead about mid-way through the half. The Golden Eagles responded with a 14-6 run over the next five minutes to tie the score at 26-26 at 5:28. Davenport outscored Cornerstone 9-4 to close out the half up 35-30. The Panthers pushed the lead to 7 points early in the second half and then maintained that cushion through the first 4:14 of the second half before Cornerstone made a little run to reclaim the lead (48-47) with 13:19 left in the half. The two heavyweights continue to give their best shots and the two teams traded leads a couple of times and Cornerstone tied the game at 56-56 with 6:46 on the clock. Davenport reclaimed the lead and kept the advantage until Ty Mason sank a couple of foul shots to tie the score at 65 all with :23 seconds on the clock. Davenport came up empty on their final attempt and the game went into overtime. The two teams went back and forth early in the OT and then DU held the lead for most of the overtime period until Wes Hudson drove the baseline and dished a ball off to Derek Kingshott for an easy layup to tie the game (76-76) for the 11^th time of the game. DU came up short in a desperation shot and the game went into double OT. Davenport came out and scored early in the 2^nd OT and held the advantage early second overtime. Cornerstone looked to be out of the game on a couple of occasions but the Golden Eagles kept battling and Wes Hudson sank a tough 3-pointer and Shane Moreland sank another 3 pointer to keep the Golden Eagles in the game. Davenport made 1 of 2 from the line to give them a 93-91 lead and Wes Hudson's half-court shot hit off the front of the rim to bring the game to a close.

UP NEXT

Cornerstone will now have to play the waiting game and hope that they will receive an At-Large berth to the NAIA National Tournament after all of the conference tournaments are completed early next week.

[Men's Basketball] Cornerstone University readies for semi-final showdown with Davenport

With a solid win over Indiana Tech, Cornerstone University now prepares to face cross-town rival Davenport University in the semifinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament.

On Thursday night, fourth-seeded Cornerstone hosted the fifth-seeded Warriors of Indiana Tech in the first round of the WHAC Tournament. After a slow start, neither team had control of the game until freshman Omari Lewis took command with a steal and thunderous dunk which ignited the stands of Cornerstone's Mol Arena. The Golden Eagles then went into the half leading 32-27. That momentum carried over into the second half as junior star Wes Hudson took the reins to lead the team to a 74-58 victory.

The win propels Cornerstone into Saturday's WHAC semifinals where they will take on top-seeded Davenport University. Cornerstone will have their hands full as they look to extend their current six-game win streak. Davenport won both of the regular season matchups between the two rivals, with each game going down to the wire. Saturday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Davenport University Student Center.

As added intrigue to the showdown, Cornerstone coach Kim Elders will be gunning for his 500^th career coaching victory at CU. Saturday's winner earns a berth in Monday's finals.

Entering the WHAC quaterfinals, the two teams had squared off twice before Thursday night's contest. Both victories went to the hands of the Golden Eagles and the contest looked to be a tough match for CU to win three in a row. After holding a five point halftime advantage, Cornerstone outstretched the Warriors to take a 16 point victory to advance to the WHAC semifinals on Saturday. Cornerstone out-rebounded the visiting team, 41-31, while also tallying 12 steals on the night.

GAME FLOW

Neither team was able to get a bucket to fall until the Warriors scored with 17:24 on the clock. Cornerstone was able to get on the scoreboard with 17:15 remaining before the half. The remainder of the first half proved to be a close contest with five ties and seven lead changes. However after a 13-5 run during the remaining four minutes until halftime, the Golden Eagles took a 32-27 halftime advantage. Wes Hudson led CU with 14 points while Jordan Hickman notched 11 points for Indiana Tech.

Cornerstone carried the momentum into the second half grabbing a 10 point lead with 18:23 on the clock. The Warriors were able to pull within three with 12 minutes remaining but after a three point shot made by Anthony Allen, Cornerstone took the momentum back and went on a 11-3 run. Cornerstone's biggest lead of the night came with 3:20 remaining when Wes Hudson drove the lane putting the Golden Eagles ahead of the Warriors by 19 points. CU rode the lead and finished the WHAC quarterfinal contest with a 74-58 victory.

After the win, Cornerstone improves to 21-10 overall and will advance to the WHAC semifinal game on Saturday set for 3 p.m.

Senior Derek Kingshott represents the Golden Eagles on the WHAC All-Conference Honorable Mention, All-Academic, and Champions of Character Teams while junior Wes Hudson was named to the WHAC All-Conference Team.

[Men's Basketball] Men's Basketball Wins Fourth Seed

After finishing 14-8 in conference play, the Cornerstone men's basketball team finished fourth in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular season and are the number four seed heading into this week's league tournament.

Davenport grabbed the regular season championship and will take the top seed into the 2013 WHAC men's basketball tournament. The Panthers will enter the tournament with a 18-4 conference record, only one game ahead of second-seeded Madonna (17-5). The first round contests will begin on Thursday, Feb. 21 with games played at the higher seed courts. With the top spot, Davenport receives the first WHAC automatic bid to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship in Point Lookout, Mo. The winner of the WHAC tournament receives the second birth. Should Davenport also win the tournament, the tournament runner-up receives an automatic bid.

Cornerstone will host the number five seed, Indiana Tech, for the first round contest. The Golden Eagles will face the winner of Thursday's Davenport/Aquinas contest on Saturday, Feb. 23, for the semi-final game if they win on Thursday night. The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

During the conference tournament last year, the Golden Eagles lost in the WHAC opening round to Lourdes after dropping a six point lead at halftime. Cornerstone was fortunate enough to receive an at-large bid to the National Tournament but lost during the first round. The Golden Eagles are eager to get back to the hard court for redemption from their last season.

The Golden Eagles traveled to Perrysburg, Ohio, for their last regular season conference contest. Cornerstone's strong first half defense and offense helped top the Gray Wolves from Lourdes University. After the win, the Golden Eagles clinch the number four seed heading into the WHAC tournament next week. CU never trailed in the game while shooting a high percentage of 58 from the court.

GAME FLOW

Two minutes into the game, Cornerstone took the 4-2 lead off a jumper made by Derek Kingshott. From then on, the Golden Eagles played strong defense for the remainder of the second half and with six minutes remaining went on a 9-0 to take a 35-9 advantage. The Gray Wolves started to close the deficit before heading into the locker room but still trailed the Golden Eagles by 22 at the half. Highlighting the half, Hudson notched 15 points while Derek Kingshott grabbed four rebounds.

The second half proved to be the same as the first with Cornerstone holding their biggest lead of the night with 12:44 remaining on the clock. Conor Hogan's layup put Cornerstone up by 29 points. Lourdes pulled within eight, 68-60, with a little less than two minutes remaining in the contest. However, momentum was gained back by Cornerstone when Hudson hit a three point jumper. The Golden Eagles rode the momentum and took a victory for their final regular season conference win, 75-63.

After the win, Cornerstone finishes regular season play with a 20-10 overall record and finishes with a 14-8 conference record. Heading into the WHAC tournament next week, Cornerstone will take the fourth seed and host the fifth seed, Indiana Tech, on Thursday.

KEY TEAM STATS

Prior to tip off, the Cornerstone Men's Basketball team honored their lone senior, Derek Kingshott. Going down to the wire, the Golden Eagles let a 13-point second half advantage slip down to three points with four seconds remaining. However, Cornerstone was able to sneak away with an 80-77 victory. The Golden Eagles shot 44.4% from the field while the Warriors hit at a 49.2% pace. Cornerstone out-rebounded the visiting team, 41-30, to help seal the win.

GAME FLOW

The first half proved to be a close contest with eight ties and 10 lead changes between the Golden Eagles and the Warriors. However with three second remaining until the half CU's, Ty Mason, hit a fade away two-point jumper to give the Golden Eagles a 41-39 advantage and momentum heading into the locker room. Highlighting the half, Mason scored 12 of his 21 points while Hudson grabbed four steals. Cornerstone shot 59.4% compared to Indiana Tech shooting 51.9%.

The momentum carried on throughout the remainder of the second half as Cornerstone found themselves ahead by 13 points with just four minutes into the half. The Warriors went on a 20-9 surge as they cut the deficit to nearly two points with 4:48 on the clock. Cornerstone was forced to regroup and call a timeout. Indiana Tech stayed within six points of Cornerstone during the rest of the contest but with only 00:04 seconds left on the clock the Warriors found themselves with the ball, down by three. The Warriors pushed the ball down the court but were unable to tie the ball game, giving Cornerstone and Derek Kingshott the last 2012-2013 season victory at home. Kingshott scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds during his final game at Mol Arena.

After the win, Cornerstone advances to 19-10 overall and 13-8 during conference play as they travel to Sylvania, Ohio, to play in their final regular season conference contest against Lourdes University.

GAME FLOW

The Golden Eagles made a 10-2 run over the first five minute of the game and they would lead throughout the remainder of the contest. Concordia would respond over the next five minutes to cut the lead to five points at 23-18 with 10:08 on the clock. The Golden Eagles would run off a 17-5 run over the next three minutes for their largest lead of the half (40-23). Concordia outscored Cornerstone 5-2 over the last two minutes to go into the lockerroom down 42-28. Cornerstone came out hot in the second half out scoring Concordia 12-6 over the first 3 ½ minutes of play to take their largest lead (54-34) of the game. Concordia did make a game of it by outscoring the Golden Eagles 28-11 over the next 11 ½ minutes to cut the lead to 65-62 but Cornerstone righted the ship to finish the game with an 84-72 win over Concordia. Cornerstone improves to 12-8 in the WHAC and 18-10 overall

GAME FLOW

The Golden Eagles led from start to finish today as they defeated Aquinas 51-44. It was a pretty game by either team with Aquinas making just 16 of 53 shots (30.2%) while Cornerstone made 17 of 57 ((29.8%) from the floor. Cornerstone jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 15:10 on the clock. Aquinas made an 8-1 run over the next two minute to draw to within 1 at 9-8. The game remained close until the end of the first half when the Golden Eagles made a 10-2 run to open up a 26-17 lead at the half. Cornerstone pushed the lead up to 16 (33-17) four minutes into the second half and that would be their largest lead of the game. Aquinas briefly got the lead back to single digits but Cornerstone maintained a pretty comfortable lead throughout the remainder of the half. Aquinas made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to finish the game down 7 with a final score of 51-44.

[Men's Basketball] Lyle Records Career High 19 Points in CU Victory

Cornerstone welcomed conference opponent University of Michigan Dearborn into Mol Arena on Saturday afternoon. Junior Alex Lyle recorded the game-high 19 points while also recording his career-high at Cornerstone. Four other Golden Eagles scored in double digits during the afternoon. Shane Moreland also broke a career record during the afternoon with six steals. As a team, the Golden Eagles recorded 16 takeaways while only turning the ball over five times. UM-Dearborn controlled the glass by out-rebounding Cornerstone, 34-32. The Golden Eagles held the Wolves to a 37.8% shooting percentage during the afternoon.

GAME FLOW

With their only lead in the contest, the Wolves were able to get on the scoreboard first after a early foul by Ty Mason to put UM-Dearborn ahead, 2-0. Alex Lyle came out shooting during the beginning of the contest helping Cornerstone go on a 26-6 run with eight minutes remaining till halftime. Lyle converted five-for-five in a period of four minutes. The Golden Eagles rode the momentum and took a 49-19 advantage into halftime after Ty Mason converted on a three point shot behind the arc with 11 seconds remaining. In the second half, the Golden Eagles continued their strong offensive play with their biggest lead of 46 points coming with seven minutes remaining and took the contest, 94-54.

KEY TEAM STATS

The No. 17^th ranked Madonna University Crusaders came into town to face the Golden Eagles for a Thursday night contest. Freshman Omari Lewis recorded his first double-double of the season and his career. Lewis grabbed 10 rebounds while tallying 10 points. The Golden Eagles were able to force Madonna into 19 turnovers but could not respond to Madonna's strong offensive second half 56.3% shooting.

GAME FLOW

Madonna held the lead during the first 13 minutes of play until Ty Mason hit a two point jumper to even the score at 15 apiece. Madonna's biggest lead in the first half came with four minutes before the break but after an old fashion three point play, Wes Hudson helped the Golden Eagles go into halftime down by one, 32-31. Highlighting the first half was Lewis' 10 points and seven rebounds.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to come from behind and even the score, 46-46, with 13 minutes remaining in the contest. Madonna answered by hitting lights out and going on a 11-0 run. Cornerstone was unable to answer the hot streak and found themselves down by 21 with just two minutes remaining. The Golden Eagles were able to cut the lead but unable to take the victory, falling to No. 17 Madonna.

After the loss, Cornerstone drops to 15-10 overall and 9-8 during conference play as they welcome University of Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday afternoon. The Men's Basketball team will also welcome back their alumni for Saturday's contest.
