[Men's Tennis] Tarnow wins ITA Arthur Ashe Award

Tonight at the NAIA Tennis Banquet in Mobile, AL, it was announced that CU Men's Tennis player Alex Tarnow won the national ITA/ Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. Considered by many to be the most prestigious award available to a college tennis player, the Arthur Ashe Award recognizes one male and one female tennis player in each division who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. Alex first won the Award for the ITA East Region so was then nominated and won the award at the national level. As part of winning the award, Alex will travel to the US Open in New York, where he will participate in Arthur Ashe Kids Day at Ashe Stadium, as well as the National NJTL breakfast.

Says Tarnow, "I am grateful and humbled to win the Arthur Ashe Jr. Award. Mr. Ashe was a great humanitarian and tennis champion, so to win an award in his name is a tremendous honor."

Coach Erickson on Tarnow, "Alex is a wonderful representative of our team, our school, and all of the values that we stand for at Cornerstone. I'm thrilled that he won this award, and I know that he has done the work to be worthy of that honor. I'm proud to be his coach."

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association is the governing body of college tennis and grants their own awards on top of the regular NAIA awards. This is the first time in the brief history of Cornerstone tennis that a CU player has won a Regional or National ITA award. The awards release can be found here.

[Men's Tennis] Golden Eagles Fall To Davenport

The Golden Eagles were defeated today by the Panthers of Davenport 9-0. Chris Reed and John Andrew almost secured a point for Cornerstone but they came up a little short in the #2 Doubles with the score of 9-7 in their loss. Cornerstone will return to action tomorrow when they face Judson (Ill.) on the road at 1:00 p.m.

[Men's Tennis] Men's Tennis Sweeps Double Header

The Cornerstone Men's Tennis team advanced to 3-0 to start the season with two wins on Friday. The first was a very tough 5-4 win against a good Huntington team. Picking up wins were John Andrew, Andrew Son, and Alex Tarnow in singles, as well as John Andrew & Chris Reed and Chris Selva & Andrew Son in doubles. Andrew Son had a particularly good match, not dropping a game in either singles or doubles, another program first.

In the afternoon, the men headed to Fort Wayne, IN to take on University of Saint Francis. Cornerstone won in convincing fashion, with a score of 9-0.

Next up for the Golden Eagles is Davenport University on Friday September 7.

[Men's Tennis] Men's Tennis Defeats Bethel in Season Opener

Cornerstone Men's Tennis opened their season on Thursday August 30 at Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN. The Golden Eagles were too much for the Pilots today, as Cornerstone blanked Bethel 9-0. Getting their first college wins were freshmen Elijah Yi, Austin Hunt, Chris Reed, and Andrew Son. Also winning were juniors Alex Tarnow and John Andrew, as well as sophomore Chris Selva in doubles. This is the first 9-0 victory in the short history of the Cornerstone tennis program.

Next up for Cornerstone is a double header on Friday August 31 against Huntington University and the University of Saint Francis.

[Men's Tennis] Men's Tennis Wraps up 2011-2012 season

The men's tennis team finished the 2011-2012 season with a home match against Bethel College. The Pilots won 6-3 and improved to 7-10 on the season. The Golden Eagles started the day winning #3 doubles. Team Tarnow and Miedema defeated Long and Kirkland 8-4. Brad Miedema won #4 singles in a tie-breaker 6-4, 4-6 (10-4). Josh Webb the lone senior on CU's team finished the season with a win at #6 singles 7-5, 6-4 over Derrike Kolb. Webb led the team in singles wins this year with 11. Cornerstone finishes the season with a 2-24-2 record.

[Men's Tennis] Saints Cruise in Win over Golden Eagles

The Aquinas Saints showed why they were ranked #13 in the latest NAIA polls defeating the Golden Eagles 9-0 in relatively dominating style. The Saints posted shut-outs in #1, #2, #3 singles and #1, #2 doubles. Justin Yoder challenged #5 singles Brendan Petz to an extra game in the first set but lost 7-5, 6-4. Aquinas improved to 19-1 overall and 3-0 in the WHAC while CU is 2-23 overall and 0-4 in the WHAC. The Golden Eagles will host Bethel on Saturday, April 14^th at 1pm.

[Men's Tennis] Men's Tennis Drops 8-1 Decision to Spring Arbor

The men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to the Cougars of Spring Arbor. Spring Arbor is 20-1 overall and receiving votes in the latest NAIA polls. They were also the MCC tournament champions.

Josh Webb won #6 singles with a dominating win 6-0, 6-1. Brad Miedema won 4 games in #4 singles but lost 6-4, 6-0. The Golden Eagles will host Aquinas on Wednesday, April 11th at Orchard Hills Athletic Club at 1pm.

The Davenport Panthers defeated Cornerstone 8-1 in men's tennis at Orchard View Athletic Club. #3 Doubles Alex Tarnow and Brad Miedema got the lone win on the day with an 8-6 decision over Tyler Chambers and Chris Grashorn. #6 Singles, Josh Webb, forced a 3^rd set decision but fell short losing 5-7, 6-4 and 10-3 in the tie-breaker. Justin Yoder forced an extra game in the second set of #5 singles but came up short 6-3, 7-5. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-21 on the season and 0-3 in the WHAC. CU will take on the Cougars of Spring Arbor on Monday, April 9^th.

[Men's Tennis] Golden Eagles Drop 9-0 Decision to #25 UNOH

The men's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to #25 Univ. Northwestern Ohio. Justin Yoder was almost able to help CU avoid the sweep splitting #6 singles 7-5, 2-6 but lost in the tiebreaker 7-10 to Akira Kuwada. All the double competitions ended in 8-2 losses. The Golden Eagles next opponent is Davenport University on April 4th at Orchard Hills Athletic Club begining at 1pm.

[Men's Tennis] Badger Wins Third Consecutive Singles Match

Josiah Badger won his third consecutive singles match. This is the first time this season a player on the team has won three matches in a row. Badger won #5 singles 6-3, 7-5.

The Cornerstone Men's Tennis team came up just short of their first spring match of the season in sunny Orlando Florida. The Golden Eagles lost 5-4 to Alfred University.

[Men's Tennis] Texan, Elijah Yi, Joins Men's Tennis Team

Cornerstone University's Men's Tennis coach Dan Erickson received his third commitment for 2012 with the signing Elijah Yi from Dallas, TX. Yi signed his letter of intent on December 17, 2011. Elijah, who only started playing tennis as a freshman in high school, worked very hard at Brookhaven Tennis Academy and qualified for Texas' Super-Champ level. Elijah is an active and accomplished tournament player.

Coach Erickson is excited about Yi coming to CU in the fall of 2012. "Elijah is exactly what I am looking for in a prospective student athlete here at Cornerstone. His faith is of supreme importance to him and he is an outstanding athlete."

When asked why he chose Cornerstone, Yi responded "I have been homeschooled since seventh grade. A focus on a biblical worldview has been an important part of my academic training. I chose Cornerstone because of the biblical focus of the school, and its focus on developing global spiritual leaders. I also liked the fact that Coach Erickson is a man of prayer and feel that he could be a good spiritual mentor for me. It's all very amazing how God led me to Cornerstone, and I am very excited about what He has in stored for me."

Yi is the son of Richard & Kyungbin Yi. He is currently undecided about a major at Cornerstone.

[Men's Tennis] Texan, Christopher Reed, Signs with Golden Eagle Tennis

Cornerstone University's Men's Tennis coach Dan Erickson received his second commitment for 2012 with the signing Christopher Reed from Abilene High School in Abilene, TX. Reed signed his Letter of Intent on December 13, 2011. The 6'0" right-hander plays #2 singles and #2 doubles for Abilene High. Chris was named all-district 1-5A in singles and doubles. In USTA tennis, Reed has qualified for Texas' Super-Champ Level.

Coach Erickson is excited about Reed coming to CU in the fall of 2012. "I've really enjoyed getting to know Chris and his family through the recruiting process. He is a great fit for our team and our school. I expect him to make a tremendous contribution on the court, and I'm thrilled to have him."

Reed is the son of Bruce & Cathy Reed. He plans to major in Mathematics Education at Cornerstone.

[Men's Tennis] Men's Tennis Inks First Recruit for 2012

Cornerstone University's Men's Tennis coach Dan Erickson received his first commitment for 2012 with the signing Austin Hunt from Permian High School in Odessa, TX. Hunt signed his Letter of Intent on October 17. The 6'2" right-hander plays #1 single and #1 doubles for Permian High. He has been team captain for 3 years and was named all-district in singles and doubles all 4 years. He qualified for the District 1-5A tennis tournament as a junior and expects to again as a senior. In USTA tennis, Hunt has qualified for Texas' Super-Champ Level in every age division.

Coach Erickson is excited about Hunt coming to CU in the fall of 2012. "Austin is a tremendous young man who will fit in with our team culture and be able to make a huge on-court contribution right away. He is absolutely the type of player we need to get our tennis program to the next level."

Hunt, also an outstanding student, is the son of Mark & Melissa Hunt. He plans to major in Exercise Science at Cornerstone.

[Men's Tennis] Wildcats Win Dual Match

Josh Webb forced a tie-breaker in the #6 singles but lost 7-4. John Andrew and Chris Selva dropped a close #1 doubles match 8-6. The Golden Eagles are now 1-7 on the season. Indiana Wesleyan improved to 6-4.
