[Men's Golf] After Strong Outing in Day 2 the Golden Eagles Finish 5th in WHAC Tournament

The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference men's golf championship came to a close today as Davenport University took the tournament championship after winning the fall regular season.

Monday during day one of the tournament, Cornerstone finished in sixth place shooting a team score of 621 after two rounds. Davenport led the pack after two rounds shooting 581.

Today, during day two, Cornerstone took a place higher finishing the championship in fifth place with a final score of 908 after three rounds. The total places them behind UNOH (906) by only two strokes. Siena Heights followed behind Cornerstone with a final score of 921. After finishing first last year, Madonna took second with a score of 882 with Indiana Tech taking third with a 901 final. Following the pack, Aquinas (939) took seventh while Lourdes (981) shot 981 as a team.

Highlighting the second day for the Golden Eagles, the men shot the low round of the day on Tuesday with their 287. This score tied for the lowest round of the 2013 tournament with Davenport (round 1) and Madonna (round 2). The score also ties for the third best team round ever at Cornerstone. The best team score in school history occurred in 2010 when the Golden Eagles shot a 285 led by Head Coach Chester VandenBerg.

Leading the Way

Tyler Coyne led the way for the Golden Eagles during the championship. The freshman shot in a 78, 73 and 71 in all three rounds for a 222 grand total, placing him ninth out of 50 WHAC opponents. Davenport's Zack Feher and Madonna's Benjamin Gawronski tied for first place totaling 217 after three rounds, placing them four over par.

Cornerstone's Zach Mick finished the championship in 13^th place with a final score of 225, Bailey Mathieson tied for 17^th with a 228, Drew DeMarti finished tied for 27^th shooting 233, Kevin Yee placed tied for 39^th and Brad Clevenger shot a 257 during the championship.

WHAC Awards

First year Head Coach VandenBerg was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Champions of Character Coach of the Year while Coyne was named to the Champions of Character Team.

Coaches Corner

VandenBerg commented on the Golden Eagles season, "We finally played to our potential. Golf is all about confidence and with a young team like we have, finding that confidence was the key. We have had a rough spring as far as the weather is concerned, and it has been frustrating to be unable to practice. This gives our team something to look forward to next fall. They can build on this all summer, play in individual events, and come next August/September, they will be ready to represent Cornerstone University at the highest level."

The Golden Eagles' men's golf team participated in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship today and after round one currently sit in sixth place. Cornerstone ended the day, after two rounds, with a team score of 621 putting them 53 over par. Davenport is the current leader after two rounds, shooting a team score of 581 placing them 13 over par for the day.

Leading the Way

After two rounds, Tyler Coyne leads all Cornerstone golfers shooting a total of 151 placing him tied for 11th place. The leader of the WHAC championship after day one is Benjamin Gawronski from Madonna who shot a 142 after two rounds.

Cornerstone's Zach Mick (T22) finished the day shooting 154, Bailey Mathieson (26th) finished with a total of 155, Anthony DeMarti (T34) scored a 161, Kevin Yee (40th) shot a 167 and Brad Clevenger (49th) ended the day with a final score of 178.

Looking Ahead

The final day of the WHAC men's golf championship will take place tomorrow at Stonewater Country Club and the winner of the tournament will receive a berth to the NAIA National Tournament.

The Cornerstone University Men's Golf team is set to participate in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship. Davenport University will host the championship with all nine conference teams participating in the event (54 players). The event will take place at Stonewater Country Club from April 22-23 with a berth to the NAIA National Tournament to the winner. The Crusaders from Madonna will look to repeat after winning last year's championship.

The championship will be the first for the Golden Eagles under new head coach, Chester VandenBerg, while entering the tournament in sixth place.

[Men's Golf] Men have Strong Outing in Knight Invitational Prior to the WHAC Championship

After playing in the Cereal City Shootout on Monday, the Golden Eagles' men's golf team took to the course again today for the Knight Invitational hosted by Calvin College in Pierson, Mich.

The day took place at the Pilgrims Run Golf Club with a total yardage of 7016 and a par score of 73. Cornerstone finished with a total team score of 325 placing them second overall behind Davenport who finished with a 318 score. Calvin College took the third place position with a final team score of 331.

Zach Mick led the way for the Golden Eagles shooting five over par, 78, placing him tied for second place with Mark Allen from Calvin College. Davenport's Jorge Benitez took the number one spot shooting 76 on the day. Cornerstone's freshman, Drew DeMarti finished in the top 10 during the Invitational shooting an 80, seven over par, placing him tied for seventh place with three other competitors.

The Golden Eagles return to the tee for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference men's golf championship at the Stonewater Country Club in Caledonia, Mich. After finishing sixth during the regular season in the fall, Cornerstone will enter the championship holding that sixth place position.

[Men's Golf] Spring Season Starts for Golden Eagles

The Golden Eagles' men's golf team had yet to begin their spring season due to inclement weather in the Grand Rapids area. However, the men were able to get on the course Monday for the Cereal City Shootout hosted by Ashford University.

The day took place at the Battle Creek Country Club with a total yardage of 6744 and a par score of 72. Cornerstone finished with a total team score of 618 shooting 311 in round one and 307 in round two. The team finished fourth behind Northwestern Ohio and in front of Aquinas College.

After two rounds, Anthony DeMarti led the way for the Golden Eagles with a score of 151 putting him +7 for the event and tied for 16^th overall.

The Golden Eagles return to the tee today, April 16, to participate in the Calvin College Invitational at Pilgrims Run Golf Club in Pierson, Mich.

[Men's Golf] Veteran's Day Experience

The Cornerstone men's golf team took part in an event during Veteran's Day that involved playing golf with local veterans from the Grand Rapids area. The event took place at 1 p.m. on Monday at Egypt Valley Country Club. The event was intended to incorporate 20-30 veterans to be paired up with players from the Golden Eagle men's golf team and play in a scramble format. The weather did not cooperate and the sub 30 degree temperatures limited the amount of participants. However those that did golf, hung tough and enjoyed a chilly yet unique trek around the prestigious course. The event was setup by club member Patrick Ladwig, who joined with Doctor Darryl Plunkett of the VA Vet Center to create an opportunity for the veterans to enjoy a golf course with a younger generation that Cornerstone provided.

Cornerstone ended the fall regular season Friday afternoon at Sylvania Country Club. Friday marked the fourth and final WHAC Jamboree for the fall golf season. At the Country Club, Davenport led the pack with a total team score of 302. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles finished fourth on the day with a team score of 319. Drew DeMarti and Bailey Mathieson both shot a pair of 78 at the Sylvania Country Club. The Golden Eagles both tied for eighth in the player standings.

After a strong outing on day one of the Cougar Invitational, the men's golf team looked to repeat on Tuesday. Leading into day two of the invitational, the men were tied for second place out of fourteen. The Golden Eagles were riding on the back of the college career personal best for Chris Wisen, who shot a 75.

The men's golf team took to Cherry Hill Golf Club on Monday as they took on the Cougar Invitational hosted by the University of Saint Francis. The invitational runs through Tuesday, with Tuesday's matches occurring at Autumn Ridge Golf Club. After day one, the men shot a team score of 305 placing them tied for second place overall. There are fourteen teams competing in the two-day event. With a total yardage of 6825 and a par score of 72, the Cherry Hill Golf Club made for difficult play on Monday. Chris Wisen led the way for the Golden Eagles, shooting a college career personal best, with a score of 75. Highlighting Wisen's score, he was able to birdie 3 of his last 4 holes on Monday. Following Wisen, Bailey Matheison shot a 76, Zach Mick and Drew DeMarti with a pair of 77's, and Casey VandenBerg notched a score of 84. Cornerstone looks to continue dominant play as they head into the second day of the Cougar Invitational, today.

After placing third in round one of WHAC Jamboree #2 on Tuesday, men's golf looked to have a strong outing in round 2 of WHAC Jamboree #2 on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles' score of 309, combined with Tuesday's 315 placed Cornerstone fourth overall in WHAC #2. Cornerstone is now sixth overall in the WHAC leaving them 15 strokes behind Davenport, the current leader.

After hosting the first round of WHAC Jamboree #2 at Quail Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon, the Golden Eagles look to make up some ground from the current conference leaders, Northwestern Ohio, today in round two at Stonewater Country Club, hosted by Davenport. On Tuesday the Golden Eagles shot a team score of 315 to finish tied for third in the nine-team event. Cornerstone was led by Bailey Mathieson who tied for first with Indiana Tech golfer, Tom Kocks. Mathieson and Kocks shot a 73 respectively, leaving them +1 for the day. Today's event will be shotgun with a tee time set for 10 a.m.

Grand Rapids, Michigan - The men's golf team looks to improve on their first WHAC Jamboree outing from September 8 when they move into Jamboree #2. Last Saturday, the men finished 6^th at Lenawee Country Club and sit 12 shots behind WHAC leader, Siena Heights. The Golden Eagles will host round one at Quail Ridge on Tuesday while the Panthers from Davenport will be hosting on Wednesday at Stonewater Country Club.

[Men's Golf] Cornerstone Falls in Tight Batlle of Beltline Cup

PIERSON, Michigan - After big hype between the heated Beltline rivalry of Cornerstone and Davenport, the Beltline Cup left no surprises. The muggy weather did not slow down either golf teams in this sudden-death playoff for not only the Cup but for bragging rights. On Tuesday afternoon during match play, the Golden Eagles were holding onto a lead going into the final two holes. Davenport ended up evening the match after the final two holes 2.5-2.5. However, the Golden Eagles were unable to bounce back after a surging Davenport team and lost in a sudden-death playoff to lose the season-opener.

The Golden Eagles look to bounce back after the disappointing loss on September 8 for the WHAC Jamboree #1 hosted by Siena Heights at Lenawee CC near Adrian, Mich.

[Men's Golf] Beltline Cup Match-Play Set for Tuesday

With Grand Rapids rivalries heating up, Cornerstone men's golf is set for match play against Davenport men's golf. This inaugural meeting is called the Beltline Cup.

The Cup is set for noon Tuesday at Pilgrim's Run Golf Club in Pierson, Mich.

[Men's Golf] Golden Eagles Busy This Summer on the Course

It has been a great summer so far for the Golden Eagles golf team as current, old and new players from the program have had a great summer so far. Former Golden Eagle golfer Chet Vandenberg has qualified for the Michigan Open held at The Orchards Golf Club. Chetfired a 67 in the first round to tie for 2nd 1 shot behind last years winner. Chet will have a short week ashe will play in the Michigan Am starting on the following Monday. Coach Campbell says, "Chet is that guy who just continues to work and get better. Chet is making golf his career and he continues to work hard and improve his skills. It is fun to watch him play." 3 other Golden Eagles will be competing along side Chet at the Michigan Am as current player and team captain Zach Mick, and stand out incoming players Zach Preuss and Anthony "Drew" DeMarti have all qualified for playing in that event.Before Zach Preuss can start his Mich Am, he and another incoming freshman Tyler Coyne will be leading their Oakland Christian HS team in defending their State Championship from last year. We wish all the Golden Eagle golfers great success this summer as it will be a busy playing schedule to get ready for this fall season.
