[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Falland and Versen earn national runner-up honors

(Geneva, Ohio) The final day of the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships was the best in Cornerstone history as the Golden Eagles flew to a top ten in the team standings on the strength of second place finishes in the mile and 400 meters along with points from two relays.

In the first event of the day, Louis Falland made is bid to win the mile. After a pedestrian 70 seconds for the first 400 meters and an equally slow 800 meter split of 2:13, the pace dropped to :60 for the next 400 with five men still in contention. With 200 meters remaining Falland got a bit of a jostle on the backstretch, then forced his way into the open and away from trouble. Coming off the last turn, Adam Godwin of Oklahoma Baptist, the 2012 defending champion was building a slight lead while Falland moved into lane two to get around Derrick Williams of Carroll College. Pushing all the way to the line, Falland came up just short as Godwin got the win in 4:10.84 to Falland's 4:12.18. Louis covered the last 400 meter in :58 and 1:58 for the second half. "That was as good a race as he could ask for," said CU Coach Rod Wortley. "To get second in his first mile final to someone who has won before is impressive."

[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Risch’s rush ruins record

(Geneva, Ohio) The race walk is usually not the most exciting event at NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. This year the 3,000 meter event rivaled the relays for drama. From the gun three men sent an aggressive pace. Cornerstone's Cody Risch along with Nick Christie and Alejandro Chavez of Missouri Baptist flew through the first half of the race in just over six minutes, well under meet record pace. The lead changed every few laps as each man tried repeatedly to break the other two. On the penultimate lap, Christie moved past Risch again and pried open a five meter gap. At the bell lap Chavez shot past Risch putting the senior and 2012 national runner up in third. With 200 meters remaining, Cody launched into a determined kick. Coming off the last turn, all three converged onto the final straightaway. Risch using momentum and incredible desire retook the lead. Christie and Chavez didn't relent. Risch reached the finish line in an incredible 11:57.54. Christie was second in 11:59.73 and Chavez third in 12:00.57. As the trio sprawled on the track, reaping the results of their efforts, the announcer noted that all three were under the championship meet record.

[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Relays advance to finals

(Geneva, Ohio) The opening day of the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships proved productive for the Cornerstone relay teams. Qualified in the 4 x 400, 4 x 800 and distance medley relays, the men advanced to Saturday's finals in two.

After just missing the final in the 4 x 400 meters last season, the Golden Eagles returned Eric Schroeder, Ryan Versen and Zach Yeo and added Spencer Perry. Running in the first of two heats, the men needed to finish first or second or have one of next four fastest times in the field of 16.

Schroeder's lead off leg of 49.2 and Perry's 49.9 put the Golden Eagles in the middle of the pack at the second exchange. Senior, Zach Yeo's 48.9 set up things up perfectly for Versen who userd a 47.3 effort to reach the finish in 3:15.61. The time broke the school record of 3:15.78 set three weeks earlier at the GVSU Big Meet and placed third in their heat. As the fifth fastest time the men qualified by time for Saturday's final.

[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Falland and Distance Men Dominate WHAC Championship

ANGOLA, IN (2/16) The Golden Eagles won every event 1,000 meter and longer at the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. Louis Falland led the team with three wins earning the Performer of the Meet award.

In the first event, the distance medley relay, most teams save their best runners for other events so the outcome is often a surprise. Zach Bourdon, Alex Macias and Tyler Grey completed the 1200, 400 and 800 meter legs, leaving Thomas Bambach the 1600 meters and a closable gap behind Indiana Tech. The sophomore from Allendale ran a 4:23 anchor split, taking the lead in the final 400 meters giving CU the win in 10:32.62.

Next up, Jared Courtright cruised through the 5,000 meters, taking control with a 65 second final 400 and earning his first WHAC indoor title in 15:11.77. "Jared has run some outstanding races at WHAC meets in his career, coming within inches of winning on several occasions," said coach Rod Wortley. "It was great to see him go out and not just win, but control the outcome. Seniors have a way of doing that."

Then Falland took over. As the top seed by over ten seconds in the mile, no one was willing to push the pace ahead of him and the field jogged through the first half in 2:30. Louis eased the gas pedal toward the floor with laps of 33, 29 and 30 before accelerating away with a 28 second last 200 meters making it 2:00 for the last 800 of the race. His winning time was just 4:30.26 and left plenty of energy for his next two events. Ninety minutes later, Louis lined up for the 1,000 meters. This time the pace was more ambitious with the leaders running 62 seconds for the first 400 meters. As he did in the mile, Grant Gunneson of Aquinas tried to pull even in the last 200, but Falland would have none of it, closing with a 28.4 lap to win in 2:34.51.

To accomplish the distance events sweep, Falland needed to win the 3000 meters, 45 minutes after the 1k. To add difficulty to the challenge, the Australian would have to run in the first heat instead of the faster second heat. "We were hoping for the 3k to scratch down to just 25 guys so there could be one heat," said CU distance coach, Nate Van Holten. "Louis didn't run a 3k this season so if it split into two heats he would be in the slower one because he didn't have a seed time." Teammate, Jared Holmberg who was also in the first heat got the job of being Falland's pacesetter for as long as possible. He got in four laps at 36 seconds and Falland took over. Louis won by 15 seconds in 8:49.92, a new personal best, then waited to see what the fast heat could do. A pack of three broke away in the final laps with Aquinas' Jacob Towne hitting the line in 8:54.54, giving Falland his third win of the meet. For his 30 points, Louis earned the WHAC Performer of the Meet trophy for the highest point total.

While CU runners didn't win the 600 or the 800 meters, they did put a man second in both races. Spencer Perry took the runner up spot in the 600 with a personal best and NAIA provisional qualifying time of 1:22.63. Zach Yeo was second in the 800 meters in 1:58.48.

While Indiana Tech dominated the sprint events, senior Eric Schroeder broke up a 1-5 Tech sweep in the 60 meter dash running a new best 7.01 for fourth.

Senior Bryant Langdon and freshman Mike Mahon placed fourth and fifth in the 35 pound weight throw. Langdon sent the ball 54' 8.3/4" and Mahon broke his freshman record on his first and sixth attempts. The mark now stands at 50' 4".

The evening concluded with Schroeder, Perry, Versen and Yeo combining for second in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 3:21.77.

Indiana Tech took the team title with 198 points followed by Siena with 132.5, Aquinas at 95.5 and Cornerstone at 94. Davenport was fifth scoring 24 followed by newcomers, Marygrove with 12 and Concordia with 1 point.

[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Falland does it again, shatters 800 meter school record

ALLENDALE (2/9) Louis Falland lost his first race of the season on the second day of the Grand Valley State University Big Meet. After finishing second to Southern Illinois' Zach Dahleen, Falland consoled himself with the satisfaction of another school record. The Australian's time of 1:53.23 shaved 2/100th off the old mark set in 2006 by Derek Scott.

The 800 meters was showcase event for the Golden Eagles as Zach Yeo finished sixth with a personal best and NAIA automatic qualifying time of 1:55.40. Altogether, six Golden Eagles ran under the 2:00, the first time that feat has been accomplished in program history. Behind Yeo, Zach Bourdon was 17th in 1:56.85, Tyler Grey, 30th in 1:58.98, Jared Holmberg set a PR, 1:59.29 in 32nd and Thomas Bambach snuck in at 1:59.92 taking 39th.

Jared Courtright had enough left after the 5,000 meters on Friday to lower his best mile time to 4:22.53, placing twelfth out of 49.

Travis Mabe and Ben Foreman added personal bests in the 3000 meters. Mabe clocked 8:49.72 for 26th while Foreman finished 47th in 9:12.17.

The team travels to Angola, IN next Saturday for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Indoor Championship meet.

[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Three School Records Fall Friday at GVSU Big Meet

(Allendale, Mich.) The opening day of the Big Meet hosted by Grand Valley State University yielded big results for the Cornerstone Men's Track & Field team. Led by Louis Falland's school record and NAIA leading performance in the mile, three CU school records fell amid five national qualifying performances.

Undefeated in individual events this season, Louis Falland faced his best competition of the year in the second heat of the invitational mile. At the gun, the fifteen men jostled their way off the starting line trying to establish position. The flying elbows and tangled feet caused several runners to stumble and the starter wisely fired a recall shot. The clerk rearranged the field into two rows, creating more space on the line and the second start was successful. After covering the opening lap in a quick 46.3, the pace settled in at 47 seconds for the next three laps with Falland finding his way into third. Then as he has done all season, Louis bolted to the front, cruising through the final 400 meters in 59.1 seconds to win going away. His time of 4:07.57 won the heat and was the fifth fastest time overall. In addition, Falland regained his spot as the top miler in the NAIA and broke the CU school record. The old mark of 4:08.96 was set in 2007 by Derek Scott, who texted his congratulations to Falland shortly after the race.

Running in the fourth heat of the invitational 400 meters, Ryan Versen plowed through the competition in the final 150 meters, winning the heat and taking sixth overall. His time of 48.50 bettered the school record of 48.90 he set last season and was well under the NAIA automatic qualifying standard.

Zach Yeo finished fourth in the 600 meters, his 1:21.07 improving his NAIA provisional qualifying mark. Spencer Perry (1:23.38 / 11th), Zach Bourdon (1:23.51 / 13th) and Tyler Grey (1:26.71 / 25th) also recorded new best times.

In the 5000 meters, Jared Courtright moved to the top five on the NAIA list with a huge personal best of 14:47.04. Ben Foreman also raced well, improving his PR by 13 seconds, clocking 15:38.23.

The evening ended with the always exciting 4 x 400 meter relay. Senior, Eric Schroeder's 49.1 lead off leg put CU in great position. Perry held form with his 49.6 effort then Versen blasted to the lead with an incredible 47.2 split. Zach Yeo needed only 49.7 to bring the baton to the finish line in a new school record 3:15.78. The old mark of 3:16.93 was set last year at this meet by Schroeder, Adam Duerksen, Versen and Yeo. Cornerstone took second in their heat and tenth out overall out of the four invitational heats.

Hayes played the role of the rabbit to perfection leading through the first 400 meters in 57.4 before peeling off on the backstretch as Louis took the lead. The Australian kept control of the rest of the way, covering the last 400 meters in 59.4, winning in 2:29.32.
[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Risch Erases School Record in the Race Walk

(Cedarville, Ohio) The Cornerstone University men's race walkers went three-for three at the Cedarville Collegiate Invitational with each athlete accomplished what they set out to do.

Senior, Cody Risch improved his time from the previous week, breaking the school record, recording the fastest time in the NAIA this season and defeating two men who walked at the Olympic Trials last June. "Cody looked phenomenal," said Coach Nate Van Holten. "He went right to the front and commanded the race against Mike Mannozzi and Dan Serianni. To go that fast was very impressive since it was really a solo effort."

Risch won in 12:04.83, breaking the school record of 12:20.49 set by Kris Shear in 2011.

After waiting a month for his eligibility to process, sophomore, Nate Vanderwall made the most of this first competition of the season. He placed fourth, lowered his personal best to 13:41.64, over thirty seconds under the NAIA automatic qualifying standard. Classmate Issac Withrow just missed getting his qualifier the previous week and made every effort to not repeat that experience. He stayed on pace most of the fifteen laps and made a big push over the final 200 meters to finish in 15:13.94, achieving a provisional qualifying mark by 1.06 seconds.

[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Five qualifiers and two school record performances at SPIRE

(Geneva, Ohio) The second day of competition at the Spire Midwest Indoor Track & Field Open began like the first day ended: with Cornerstone winning a relay. This time it was Tyler Grey, Louis Falland, Zach Bourdon and Zach Yeo holding off Edinboro in the 4 x 800 meters 7:56.17 to 7:56.98. The time was under the NAIA provisional standard and the first of five national qualifying events for the day.

CU's top 400 meter runner, Ryan Versen moved up to the 600 meters and raced it to perfection taking the lead in the homestretch and getting the win and a provisional qualifier. His time of 1:22.17 puts him second on the CU all-time list.

In the pole vault, Logan Norton broke his school record from last year, clearing 15' 1" on his third attempt. He also had two good attempts at 15' 7".

Cornerstone throwers had a good day in the circle. Ross Raymond's third attempt in the shot put measured 45' 7.25" giving him the school record after some near misses this season. He added over a foot to the old mark of 44' 4" set by Joel Leong in 2009. Senior Bryant Langdon came into the meet looking for a national qualifying mark in the 35 pound weight throw and got it on his third throw. His 54' 4.5" attempt gave him second place and bettered the NAIA provisional standard.

The final two events were the most exciting. In the 3,000 meters, Jared Courtright was looking to better the NAIA automatic qualifying time of 8:40.80. Needing to average just under 52 seconds per lap, the senior found himself in the hole when the field went out in 54 seconds for the opening lap. For the next five laps Jared raced in the pack just behind the leaders then made a bold move on the backstretch to break free as the pace started to slow. "On the bell lap I saw the clock and it was the same time as I had at nationals last year," Courtright said. "I knew I needed to have a great last 300." A determined sprint produced a 46 second final circuit and 2012 All-American in the event was rewarded with the qualifying time, a new PR of 8:37.28 and a fourth place finish.

The final highlight of the meet came in the 4 x 400 meter relay with Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference rivals, Cornerstone, Indiana Tech and Siena Heights in the fast heat. Tech had the best day taking second in 3:16.31 while CU's quartet of Eric Schroeder, Bourdon, Versen and Yeo nailed one more automatic qualifying mark, running 3:18.38 for third. Siena was fourth in 3:20.06.

The team travels to Indiana Wesleyan University for their next meet, February 2.
