Women’s Soccer drops physical 1-0 contest to Aquinas

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a physical matchup of local rivals, the Aquinas Saints came up with the only score in the 73' to post a 1-0 victory over the Golden Eagles. The loss is only the second of the year for Cornerstone as they fall to 8-2-2 overall and 3-2-0 in WHAC play. CU will have a week off before hosting Marygrove College next Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

The Golden Eagles traveled the short route over to Aquinas to play a crucial WHAC contest this afternoon and came up on the short end of a 1-0 game.  The Saints controlled the tempo for much of the first half of play but the Golden Eagles were good on defense limiting the Saints to very few opportunities as Lexanna Siemasz filled in for Kate Wiegman and played very well in the position.

The Golden Eagles had one of the best chances of the half coming off a set piece late in the half when Lexie-Brisson Fast headed the ball of the cross and it hit the GK but she gave up a rebound that was hit again but blocked by a defender.

Cornerstone played much better in the second half and was able to possess the ball a lot more.  The Saints hit the game winner in the 72nd minute of play after the Golden Eagles lost possession in the midfield and they hit a ball over the top of the defense and Leanne Latch beat GK Allison Snowden to the ball, pushed it by her and put the ball in the open net.

Both teams finished with four shots on goal with AQ holding a slight edge in total shots 10-8. There were a combined 23 fouls in the contest while Allison Snowden finished with three saves.

Cornerstone drops to 3-2 in the WHAC and 8-2-2 overall.  Cornerstone will have the week off and will return to action next Saturday when they host Marygrove College at 4:30 p.m.
