GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In the final regular season match of the year, the Cornerstone women's soccer team fell behind 1-0 in the first five minutes and that would be the lone score of the match as they fell to No. 21 Siena Heights. The setback drops the Golden Eagles to 10-4-3 overall while they are 4-4-1 in the conference. CU earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming WHAC Tournament and will play at No. 3 seed Aquinas on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
For the fourth time this season, all in league matches, head coach Randy Strawser saw his team fall by the slimmest of margins as they lost to Siena Heights 1-0 on Saturday.
The Saints, ranked No. 21 in the latest NAIA Top-25 Poll, got on the board early with a goal in the 6' to take the 1-0 edge. Siena Heights almost added to it with a PK goal in the first half but CU keeper Allison Snowden (SO/Kalamazoo, Mich.) came up with a big save to keep it a one-goal contest.
The second half saw much of the same pace of play between the two teams with each having their fair chances of posting more goals but each keeper was up to the task as the SHU backstop finished with two saves and Snowden eight.
The loss places Cornerstone in the sixth spot for the upcoming WHAC Tournament. The quarterfinals will start Wednesday with the Golden Eagles staying in town to face No. 3 seed Aquinas College. The Saints won the regular season meeting 1-0. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on November 5.
