GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone women's soccer team opened up postseason play today and they survived and will advance in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) thanks to a win in penalty kicks over rival Aquinas. The two teams ended regulation and the two overtime periods scoreless and CU went on to win 6-5 on penalties. Cornerstone, the No. 6 seed, advances to Saturday's semi-final where they will meet No. 2 seed Siena Heights.

The Golden Eagles made the short trip over to Aquinas to play their WHAC Quarterfinal this afternoon and they picked a great day to do it.  Cornerstone came out aggressive and controlled the ball for the majority of the first half but the game was mostly played between the two penalty boxes with neither team creating real dangerous opportunities.

Cornerstone's one good chance came from Morgan Haddad (FR/Troy, Ohio) who hit a longer shot that skimmed the top of the crossbar for a goal kick.  The Saints best chance came late in the first half in a similar way but their shot hit off the face of the goal and then was cleared.

Aquinas came out a little more aggressive and held the Golden Eagles in their own half at the beginning of the second half but the Golden Eagles settled in and played well over the last part of the half and CU outshot Aquinas 7-3 in the second half.  After neither team could muster a goal in either of the 10 minute OT periods, the match went to a shootout where both teams made all five.   Josie Litty (JR/Hudsonville, Mich.), Lexanna Siemasz (SO/Waterford, Mich.), Shannon Morse (SO/Lake Odessa, Mich.), Mykayla Denison (FR/Muskegon, Mich.), and Teigan Mitcham (JR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) all converted for Cornerstone.

CU goalkeeper Allison Snowden (SO/Kalamazoo, Mich.) made the first save on the sixth kicker and Laura Roerig (SR/Grandville, Mich.) converted her kick for the 6-5 win for the Golden Eagles.

Cornerstone now advances to Saturday's semi-final round where they will meet nationally ranked No. 21 and the conference's second seed, Siena Heights.
