GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Looking to pull off an upset against their cross-town rival Panthers, the women's basketball team struggled to finish the first half and then No. 2 DU expanded the lead in the second to down CU 76-48. The loss is the first against an NAIA foe since December 6 for Cornerstone as they fall to 15-7 on the year and 10-4 in league play. CU will look to rebound next Wednesday when they face Lourdes in Sylvania, Ohio.
Game Flow
The opening half saw a slow start with neither team's offense really clicking but after DU opened a 15-9 lead, CU used a 6-1 run to get within one at 16-15. The No. 2 Panthers then flexed their muscles and scored the next eight in route to closing the half on a 24-8 spurt to lead 40-23.
After a four straight points from Jill Steenwyk (JR/Sparta, Mich.) and Jill Hendrickson (JR/Ada, Mich.) got CU within 13, Davenport again turned up the pressure increasing the lead back into the 20's thanks to an 11-1 run. The lead slowly grew for the remainder of the game as DU posted their 12th win in the last 13 meetings against Cornerstone.
