GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Playing host to the No. 5 ranked team in the country proved to be difficult for the women's basketball team as the Golden Eagles fell 70-42 to the Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan. IWU raced out to a 20-7 lead in the first quarter and sent Cornerstone to their third straight defeat, all to ranked teams. CU, now 1-3, will open WHAC play on Saturday at Lourdes at 3 p.m.
Game Flow
Cornerstone made the most of their first game at home in the opening minutes as they used a 7-2 run to hold a 7-6 lead over the Wildcats but IWU came back to score 14 unanswered to close out the opening quarter up 20-7. That lead slowly grew as halftime approached as Indiana Wesleyan went into the locker room leading 39-16.
CU showed some signs of life early in the third quarter and after a couple of free-throws from Jill Steenwyk (SR/Sparta, Mich.) and a lay in by Jesse Sheridan (FR/Argyle, Texas), had the lead down to 18 but that would be as close as they would get with the Wildcats rounding out the 28-point road win.
Say What?
"It was a tough night against a very good opponent. IWU took us out of things we wanted to do and outplayed us. We need to get back to the basics and focus on what we do." Head coach Katie Mattera
