SYLVANIA, Ohio – Trailing 16-12 entering the second quarter, Cornerstone outscored the home Gray Wolves 21-5 to open a 12-point lead in route to a 56-37 win in both team's WHAC opener. The victory ends a 3-game skid for the Golden Eagles as they are now 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. CU will host Siena Heights next Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Game Flow
Early on it was all defense but midway through the opening quarter, the Gray Wolves took control and opened a 6-point lead on two different occasions and that was how the quarter would finish with LU holding an 18-12 lead. The defense for CU then buckled down and held the Gray Wolves to just five points in the second as Cornerstone took the lead for good.
After a triple from Jesse Sheridan (FR/Argyle, Texas) with 6:46 to play in the second quarter to put CU up 21-19, the Golden Eagles never trailed and went into the break leading 33-21. That lead grew in the third quarter to as many as 16 but LU closed on a run to finish down by 12. The CU offense got a spark early in the fourth when Mari Bugg (JR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored four points and their defense was lifted by Samantha Kolenda (JR/Sparta, Mich.) who had a team high seven rebounds.
