Last second FT sends women’s hoops to 68-67 loss

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone rallied from a 10-point third quarter deficit only to see Madonna convert one of two free-throws with 2.6 seconds to play as the Golden Eagles fell 68-67 to the No. 21 ranked Crusaders. The loss is the first of the WHAC season for CU as they are 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the league. CU will resume play on Tuesday at Lawrence Tech.

Game Flow
The first half of play saw lots of back and forth action but after scoring the final two points of the first quarter to tie it, the Golden Eagles continued their run into the second and led by as many as seven after back to back buckets from Tanner Hostetler (SR/Archbold, Ohio) and Emma Lockhart (JR/Reed City, Mich.) which forced MU into a timeout. The Crusaders fought back and took a 3-point lead with just under a minute to play but a last second triple from Jesse Sheridan (FR/Argyle, Texas) tied the game at 36-36 at the break.

Madonna recovered from the late third quarter drought as the Crusaders' offense was clicking on all cylinders early in the third as they raced out to a 10-point lead, 49-39, forcing CU into a pair of timeouts. The Golden Eagles fought back to get within three but MU converted two late free-throws to lead 57-52 after three.

The Golden Eagles then came out hot in the fourth quarter and after nine straight points, four from Tanner Hostetler, two from Jill Steenwyk (SR/Sparta, Mich.) and a triple from Jesse Sheridan, CU had re-taken the lead 63-60. The game see-sawed from their and CU had a chance on their final possession to win it but a turnover and then a foul with 2.6 seconds left saw Madonna convert the free-throw to win 68-67.
