66-64 win over Bethel highlighted by clutch plays

MISHAWAUKA, Ind. –  The Golden Eagles went down to Mishawaka, Ind. to take on the Pilots of Bethel College and they left with a 66-64 hard fought victory today.  Jill Steenwyk led the Golden Eagles with her first double double of the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds.   Cornerstone will return to action on Tuesday with another Crossroads foe (St. Francis) in Ft. Wayne, Indiana at 1:00 p.m.



Game Flow

Cornerstone opened the game with a 10-2 run over the first 2:45 minutes of play but the Pilots quickly erased that lead over the next two minutes to tie the game at 10-10.  Cornerstone regained their lead to pushed it to as many as seven points (20-13) but would settle for a 22-18 lead at the quarter.  The Pilots cut the lead to 1 point in the second quarter but would go into the locker room at half-time down four points with the score 34-30.  Jesse Sheridan led the Golden Eagles with 13 points in the half.

The game remained close throughout the third period.    Jill Steenwyk made a two pointer to push the lead to 46-41 but the Pilots responded and took their first lead of the quarter (50-49) with :35 seconds left but the Golden Eagles would finish the quarter with a 52-50 lead on a 3-pointer by Tanner Hostetler.  The fourth quarter featured five ties and five lead changes with the largest lead being a Bethel 63-60 lead at 2:37.  Tanner Hostetler hit another huge 3-pointer with :17 seconds to give Cornerstone a 65-64 lead and Jill Steenwyk added a foul shot with :05 seconds left to make it 66-64.  Bethel missed a last second shot to tie the game to give Cornerstone a tough two point win on the road.  Cornerstone improved to 7-5 with the win.
