GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone built a six point lead after two quarters and extended it to 14 after three but had to hold off a late Aquinas rally to end a 2-game skid with the final of 60-56. Tanner Hostetler (SR/Archbold, Ohio) scored a team high 13 points to help CU improve to 4-5 on the year and 3-2 in the WHAC. Cornerstone heads to Dearborn on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip against the Wolverines.
Game Flow
Cornerstone, which started with a difference starting five for the first time since the opening game of the year, jumped out to an 8-2 lead on buckets from three different players but the remainder of the first quarter was all Aquinas as the Saints closed on a 13-5 run to lead 15-13. CU then battled back to outscore AQ 21-13 in the second as Samantha Kolenda (JR/Sparta, Mich.) led the team with eight points at the break.
The strong play by the home team continued into the third quarter as CU dominated, outscoring Aquinas 14-6 and only allowed two points in the first 7:39 of the frame. After CU had built their largest lead of 14 (48-34), Aquinas slowly started to make a comeback but some late free-throws and an offensive put-back by Ellery Mast (SO/Zeeland, Mich.) in the final minute were the difference.
