GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the opening quarter and rode that start to finish off a season sweep of Aquinas with a 64-55 win on Wednesday night. The victory lifts the Golden Eagles to 11-9 on the season and 9-4 in league action. CU will come back home on Saturday to host Lourdes at 1 p.m.
Game Flow
The opening part of the game saw CU fall behind the hosts Saints 4-2 but then a 13-0 run propelled the Golden Eagles to a 15-4 lead and they held a 10-point edge (19-9) after one. The CU offense then quieted a bit in the second quarter as Aquinas brought the lead down to just six (27-21) at the break.
After an early bucket cut the margin to three, Cornerstone used strong play from Jill Steenwyk (SR/Sparta, Mich.) and Jesse Sheridan (FR/Argyle, Texas) to maintain a 4-7 point lead for most of the third and into the fourth. After the Saints again cut the margin down to just two, Sheridan hit a big three in the corner and it ignited a 5-0 run to put the Golden Eagles back up seven 53-46. Free throws down the stretch iced the 9-point win to help CU sweep the season series.
Say What?
