GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone trailed 3-0 to visiting Marygrove with just over 26 minutes to play but three straight Golden Eagle goals sent the match into overtime where the Mustangs converted the game winner with 7:25 to play in the second extra frame. The loss concludes the season for Cornerstone as they conclude 2016 with an overall record of 11-6-2.
Game Flow
Marygrove took full control of the match in the opening 20 minutes as they got goals from Mike Ayanwale in the 5' and then a second goal from Mario Morana in the 17'. That lead help up until halftime as CU went into the locker room looking to regroup.
Then just 13:17 into the second, Cornerstone scored an own goal to fall behind 3-0 and the Mustangs looked to have pulled the upset but CU refused to give up as they got their first goal with 26:01 to play from
Joshua Busscher. Then just 7:52 later,
David Mutembezi scored on a free kick from abut 25 yards out to cut the margin to a single goal.
Needing one more goal to complete an unthinkable comeback,
Richard Areche took a loose ball above the box and scored which sent the crowd into a fury as the match went into overtime. After a scoreless opening 10 minutes of extra play, the two teams lined up for a second but a lights panel went out forcing a delay for almost 15 minutes.
Fresh out of the delay, a misplayed ball in their own end led to a Marygrove breakway in which Mario Morana put the ball by the CU keeper for the game winner.
