Top Ranked Saint Francis down’s Women’s Hoops in the opener of the DU Holiday Classic

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles gave the undefeated No. 1 Saints a run for their money in the early going, but could not pull off the upset, falling 73-58 in the opener of the DU Holiday Classic. Cornerstone, now 8-7 on the year, will get a chance to rebound from the tough loss tomorrow when they take on Bethel College to close the DU Holiday Classic.

Game Flow
The Golden Eagles came out with tremendous confidence and energy that carried them throughout the first half. The half was fast paced, as each team continued to trade buckets on the offensive end. The largest lead of the half was just six points by Saint Francis, but multiple Golden Eagles stepped up at different times to keep it close, as Cass Vredevoogd scored nine and Lizzy Otten scored seven to eventually give CU a 33-32 lead at the break.

Cornerstone was unable to match the Saint Francis offense to start the second half, as the Saints outscored the Golden Eagles 22-11 in the third quarter to earn a ten-point lead. CU responded with back-to-back three's by Mya Udell and Jesse Sheridan to begin the fourth quarter that cut the lead to six, but five fourth quarter turnovers by CU allowed USF to break the game open and earn a 73-58 victory to stay undefeated on the year.

By the Numbers
15/13/12 – The big three of Lizzy Otten (15pts), Jesse Sheridan (13pts), and Cass Vredevoogd (12pts) were the top three in scoring for CU in the loss.
12-2 – Saint Francis recorded 12 steals in the game to Cornerstone's two.  
3 – Starting forward Ellery Mast found herself dishing the ball; tying a career high three assists in the loss.
12-5 – USF brought down 12 offensive rebounds, while CU brought down just five.
20/15 – A significant amount of points were scored off turnovers, as the Saints had 20 points off turnovers and the Golden Eagles had 15.

Cornerstone will play one more game in the DU Holiday Classic tomorrow when they take on Bethel College at 5 p.m.
