WHAC Season to open for Women’s Basketball with Rochester and Siena Heights

GRAND RAPIDS - Mich. – The Golden Eagles get set to open the 2018-19 conference season with WHAC contests at receiving votes Rochester College and vs. Siena Heights. CU will begin the week concluding a four-game road trip at receiving votes Rochester on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and then conclude the week with a 3:30 p.m. start inside Mol Arena against Siena Heights. Live video will be available for the game at Rochester and live video, audio, and stats will be available for the game vs. Siena Heights. Live links can be found for both matches at cugoldeneagles.com.

Last Week Recap
The Golden Eagles played three games last week and went 1-2. CU is now 1-6 on the year as the defeated Grace Christian 64-63 on Monday, fell 93-44 at No. 14 Saint Francis on Wednesday, and lost 62-54 at Bethel College on Saturday. Cornerstone will begin conference action this week with a game at receiving votes Rochester and vs. Siena Heights. 
 
Goebel Starting
Sophomore Katrina Goebel got the start at forward in both games this week, replacing the injured Taylor Richards who is out for a few weeks with a knee injury. Goebel has taken advantage of the opportunity scoring a career high seven points at Saint Francis and bringing down a career high six rebounds at Bethel College. Goebel joined the varsity roster late in the 2017-18 season after spending most of the season with the junior varsity roster. Goebel is also a varsity women's golfer for the Golden Eagles. 
 
Nyboer continues to dominate
Sophomore Shelby Nyboer continues to dominate in the post, leading the Golden Eagles in points, rebounds, and blocks this season. Nyboer broke her career high for points for the second time this season, scoring 23 at Bethel College to break her previous high of 22 at Grace Christian. In the 23-point game, Nyboer went 11-15 from the field for a 73.3 percentage from the field to help her to a 65.7 percentage on the week. 
 
WHAC Opener
The Golden Eagles will begin the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) season this week with games at Rochester and vs. Siena Heights. CU went 11-9 in conference play last season and are 204-96 since the 2000-01 season.
 
Scouting Rochester
The Warriors of Rochester enter their second season as a member of the WHAC receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Top 25/RV preseason poll. Rochester will host receiving votes Huntington on Tuesday night before hosting the Golden Eagles on Wednesday evening as the team has put up a 6-0, 1-0 WHAC record to start the year. RC is a veteran team with all juniors and seniors in their starting lineup. Junior Devan Valko leads the team with 12.5 PPG through the first six games of 2018-19. As a team, the Warriors are one of the best defensive teams in the NAIA ranking first in field goal percentage defence (25.4) and number two in scoring defense per game (43.3). 
 
Scouting Siena Heights
The Saints have posted a 2-1, 1-1 WHAC record so far this season. A young roster under veteran head coach Sue Syljebeck look to build upon an 18-13, 11-9 WHAC record in 2017-18. Forward Peyton Banks has led SHU in scoring so far this year with 14.3 PPG. Siena Heights is a very scrappy team that is dominant on the boards, out-rebounding opponents by an average of 19.6 a game through their first three games of the season.
