GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Cornerstone kicked off conference play on Wednesday evening against Indiana Tech. The Golden Eagles, who hadn't played a game in 17 days, earned a solid 6-2 victory in game one before falling in game two by a score of 8-2. The split brings their overall record to 6-8 and the WHAC record to an even 1-1. Michigan-Dearborn will come to town on Saturday for another WHAC doubleheader, starting at 1:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Maddie Vassar recorded the first hit and the first run on the new turf, as she led off the game with an infield hit and was tripled in by a gap shot by Alicia Ontiveros. The Golden Eagles scored two more runs to make it a 3-0 game after the first inning. Courtney Ducharme hit a 2-RBI double in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-1. Rachel Younts pitched a complete game, while surrendering only four hits and two earned runs.
Game 2 – The game was close until Indiana Tech blew the game open with five runs in the sixth inning. Indiana Tech tallied nine hits, three of which were home runs. Sierra Sanchez tallied three hits and an RBI. Brooke Leonard pitched 5.1 innings, struck out six batters while surrendering five earned runs.
