LEESBURG, Fla. – After dropping four straight to start the season, the Cornerstone softball team came out and won both games on Tuesday. They recorded a hard-fought, down-to-the-wire 5-4 victory over Trinity International and a one-hit 6-0 shutout of Bethel. The Golden Eagles will have a day off on Wednesday before playing against #RV Bellevue and Spring Arbor on Thursday.
Game 1 – Trinity International jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning. Cornerstone responded with four runs of their own in the second, including an RBI single from Jessica Wright and a 2-RBI single from Mackenzie Vallad. Vallad would go on to add a crucial insurance run via a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. The 5-2 deficit was cut to 5-4 in the top of the seventh before the Golden Eagle defense escaped, stranding the game-tying and go-ahead Trojans on base to end the game.

Game 2 – Sierra Sanchez put CU on the board in the second inning with an RBI double. Her twin sister, Savanna Sanchez, followed with an RBI single in the third inning. Courtney Ducharme hit a bases-loaded, 2-RBI double to the gap in right center in the fourth inning. Defensively, Bethel only had one baserunner in the first five innings. Rachel Younts carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before she gave up the only hit of the day.

By the Numbers:
4 – Alicia Ontiveros record two sacrifice hits in each game.
1 – Rachel Younts only allowed one hit against Bethel, which is the lowest allowed since then-freshman Brooke Leonard pitched a one-hitter on March 7, 2015.
5 – Five assists apiece recorded by middle-infielders Maddie Vassar and Alicia Ontiveros against Bethel.
3/4 – Three hits and four RBI recorded by Mackenzie Vallad.
6 – Six hits by the Sanchez twins (three apiece)
