YPSILANTI, Mich. - Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the women's tennis team claimed four of the six singles matches to pull out a dramatic 5-4 win over Concordia on Thursday evening near Ann Arbor. The victory is the second of the season in the WHAC for CU as they improve to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in league action. Cornerstone will host Lawrence Tech on Saturday at 4 p.m. at GR Racquet and Fitness.
Doubles Highlights - The Cardinals got a leg up in the overall match as they took two of the three contests. In three closely contested matches, Cornerstone was only able to win at No. 2 behind
Sierra Griffith and
Nicole VerHulst by a final of 8-6. The Golden Eagles fell by slim margins of 8-5 and 9-7 on courts one and three.
Singles Highlights - Two of the six matches went into a third set with the Cardinals winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 on Court 2 but CU grabbed a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory on the top court from
Lauren Brendel. After CUAA posted a straight set win at No. 3, it was all Cornerstone as they won the final three all in two sets.
Amanda VerHulst won 6-3, 6-1 on Court 4,
Sierra Griffith won 6-3, 6-4 on Court 5 and
Nicole VerHulst won 6-1, 6-0 on Court 6.
What's Next? Cornerstone faces Lawrence Tech on Saturday to conclude WHACÂ play. A win would bump CU up to third place in the final league standings which would be the highest in program history.
