Season ends for women's soccer in double overtime loss to Lawrence Tech

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The snow ramped up as the night went on and so did the stakes as Cornerstone fell 2-1 in double overtime to Lawrence Tech, ending their season. With the loss, CU concludes the year at 14-5-0 with an 8-3-0 WHAC record. Head coach Randy Strawser and the Golden Eagles will now look to build on this strong season in preparation for next fall.

The Highlights
  • Lawrence Tech struck first, pushing players forward, playing a smart ball across the box, and finishing easily to open the scoring.
  • Cornerstone led by Alexys Riksen, wasted only 12 seconds in their response to the Blue Devil goal. Off the kickoff, Riksen picked up the ball and started weaving through defenders. At roughly 25 yards out, she looked up and unleashed a missile into the top right corner to level the square at 1-1.
  • The two squads battled throughout the second half, with neither team able to break the deadlock. Lawrence Tech controlled the majority of proceedings, generating multiple chances. However, the Blue Devils were unable to find the back of the net and overtime would be required to separate the two sides.
  • Cornerstone started overtime aggressively, looking to counter punch the second half pressure from Lawrence Tech. Multiple shots by Alexys Riksen went just wide of the right post as CU pushed hard for the victory.
  • The Golden Eagles were unable to capitalize on their chances in the first overtime period and Lawrence Tech capitalized 27 seconds into the second overtime to claim the victory.
