Last Week Recap

The Golden Eagles snapped a 13-game losing skid this past week with a 67-60 victory over Madonna University. With the victory, Cornerstone is now 2-13 on the year with a 1-6 WHAC record.

CU traveled to Livonia last Saturday, seeking to claim their first WHAC win of the season. Standing in their way were the Crusaders of Madonna University. Madonna was also seeking their first WHAC win so something had to give.

Cornerstone jumped out to an early lead, going up 12-5 with just over two minutes remaining the first. A pair of baskets by Madonna cut the lead to 12-9 at the end of one. The Crusaders offense exploded in the second quarter, tallying 22 points and taking a 31-26 lead into the half.

The Golden Eagles responded strongly in the third, chipping away at the Madonna lead. After the dust had settled, CU was up two, 47-45, with the fourth quarter looming.

Although Madonna would tie the game at 58, Cornerstone never trailed in the final quarter. Free throws stretched out the CU lead, as Rebekah Crosby and Shelby Nyboer led the way with 18 points apiece. Sterling DeGayner also added a career-high, with 16 points to continue her strong play.

Scouting Davenport University

Cornerstone will take a break from WHAC opponents to face their GLIAC rivals, the Davenport University Panthers.

Members of the NCAA Second Division, Davenport sits at 4-6 with an 0-3 GLIAC record on the season. The Panthers are coming off a tough 82-53 loss to #3 Grand Valley State and will be looking to bounce back.

Offensively, DU is an explosive squad that averages 75 points a contest. Davenport's top scorers Madison Jones and Toni Grace are averaging 18.2 and 16.7 points per game, respectively. Both Jones, a freshman guard, and Grace, a sophomore guard, are dangerous from downtown. Jones is connecting on 39.4% of triple tries, while Grace is shooting 36.8% from deep.

The Panthers also have a strong paint presence in 6-4 center, Jenna Falkenberg. The senior from Saginaw is averaging 11.7 points a game and forms a fearsome defensive duo with junior forward Courtney McInerney. A 6-0 forward, McInerney is averaging 1.8 blocks a game and has started every game for the Panthers.

Cornerstone will have their hands full with the Panthers explosive backcourt and strong frontcourt but will look to pull off the upset this Wednesday night.
