Last Week Recap
Cornerstone enjoyed a two and half week break from competitive play and will look to get back in action this upcoming Saturday against Rochester University. The Golden Eagles are coming off of a tough 97-47 loss to Davenport University on the 18th of December. The Panthers proved to be a very tough opponent for Cornerstone, outrebounding CU 56-33 and connecting on 45% of their looks from the floor.
Before their loss to DU, Cornerstone grabbed their first WHAC victory of the season 67-60 over Madonna University. The victory was CU's second win of the year and their first road triumph. Three Golden Eagles were in double figures on the night and the team shot 44% from the field.
DeGayner Stepping Up
After injuries forced multiple Golden Eagles to the sidelines, Cornerstone was looking for someone to step up. Junior guard
Sterling DeGayner has started 10 straight contests for CU and has had multiple strong showings. In Cornerstone's 67-60 victory over Madonna, DeGayner tallied a career-high 16 points in 30 minutes on the floor. DeGayner also notched 9 assists against UNOH, earlier in the year. Her 9 assists were the most in a single game for CUWBB since
Lizzy Otten's 8 against Madonna on January 28, 2018. As the season continues, DeGayner will be vital to the team's success.
Scouting Rochester University
The Warriors of Rochester University are 4-12 on the season and sit at 2-4 in the WHAC with victories over UNOH and Madonna.
Rochester has had two players claim WHAC Player of the Week in forward Delaney Bolles forward Devan Valko. Bolles has been highly efficient from the floor this season, shooting 58.9%. Valko's top contributions come from beyond the three-point line, where she has shot 33/91 from deep.
Surprisingly enough, neither Bolles nor Valko lead Rochester in points per contest. That honor goes to forward Lexey Tobel, who is posting an average of 14.5 points. Tobel has posted 16+ points in each of Rochester's last three contest, highlighted by a 20-point effort against Rio Grande.
The Warriors are coming off of a smashing 100-39 victory over Lambton College. Rochester turned Lambton over 33 times on the night and shot 45.7% from the field. Devan Valko led the way with 24 points and will look to carry that momentum into this matchup.
Cornerstone will have to find a way to slow down the Rochester front court and finish possessions on the glass in order to walk out of Rochester Hills with their second WHAC victory.
