KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles continued their Florida trip with games against Mount Vernon and Spring Arbor on Monday.
McKenzie Butgereit hit two solo homers in an 8-3 loss to MVNU and added the lone Cornerstone hit in the team's 2-0 setback to Spring Arbor. The two losses drop Cornerstone back to 2-3 overall heading into Tuesday's games against #12 Indiana Wesleyan and Bethel (Ind.).
Game 1: Cornerstone 3 – Mount Vernon Nazarene 8
- McKenzie Butgereit got the Golden Eagles on the board with a solo home run to right field in the top of the 2nd inning
- The Cougars responded with an RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
- The game remained 1-1 until the 6th inning, when MVNU scored seven runs on six hits to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
- Butgereit blasted her second homer of the contest in the top of the 7th inning, but the Golden Eagles ultimately fell 8-3.
Notable:
- Mikayla Meade pitched three innings, surrendered two hits and only one run in her first collegiate start.
- Lexi Lieske recorded two hits, marking the senior's third multi-hit game in the last four games.
- Butgereit's two home runs marks the first multi-home run game by a Golden Eagle since Jocelyn Hernandez' pair of homers against Calumet St. Joseph on March 9, 2019.
Game 2: Cornerstone 0 – Spring Arbor 2
- After the first three Spring Arbor batters reached base, Courtney Ducharme pitched out of a bases-loaded nobody out jam, surrendering only one run.
- Butgereit recorded the lone hit of the game for the Golden Eagles with a base hit in the second inning.
- The Cougars tallied an insurance run in the 3rd inning en route to a 2-0 victory.
Notable:
- Seven Cougars were stranded on base, including five over the first two innings.
- Butgereit's three hit day brought her batting average to an even .500 (6-for-12) and a 1.083 slugging percentage.
- Courtney Ducharme pitched all seven innings, marking the 4th complete game of her career.
What's Next
Cornerstone (2-3) will continue the Florida trip with a tough contest against NAIA No. 12 Indiana Wesleyan at 2:30 before a 4:45 game against Bethel (Ind.)
