Softball concludes Florida trip with two victories

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles concluded their 13-game spring break trip with a pair of hard-fought victories on Saturday, which included a 7-5 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange before a 5-4 win over Calumet St. Joseph. The two wins boosts Cornerstone's record to 6-7 heading into conference play, which is scheduled to begin on March 25 against Rochester.

Game One: Cornerstone 7 – Hannibal-LaGrange 5
  • Allisen Martz got the Golden Eagles on the board with a two-RBI double in the 3rd inning.
  • Cornerstone doubled their lead to 4-0 in the 4th inning when a run scored on an error, followed by a sacrifice fly from Alessa Baldwin-Buchner.
  • Kaitlin Johnson pitched the first four innings, surrendering only one hit before turning things over to the bullpen.
  • Hannibal-LaGrange rallied for five runs – four of which were unearned – in the top of the 5th inning to claim a 5-4 advantage.
  • McKenzie Butgereit tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI double down the right field line in the bottom of the 6th inning.
  • Buchner recorded her second RBI of the game with a base hit to left field, giving Cornerstone a 6-5 lead.
  • Morgan Murat tacked on an insurance run with a bases-loaded RBI single, making it 7-5.
  • Mikayla Meade surrendered a leadoff walk in the top of the 7th, but was able to retire the next three batters to secure the victory.

Notable:
  • Allisen Martz recorded her first career multi-RBI game.
  • The Golden Eagles tied a season high with 13 hits.
  • Alessa Buchner set a Cornerstone career high with three hits.
  • McKenzie Butgereit tallied her fifth multi-hit game of the trip.

Game Two: Cornerstone 5 – Calumet St. Joseph 4
  • Courtney Ducharme retired nine of the first ten Calumet batters, with the one baserunner coming from a 3rd inning walk.
  • Calumet St. Joseph capped off a three-run 4th inning with a two-run home run to left field.
  • Cornerstone plated four runs in the top of the 5th to take a 4-3 lead. The first two came from an error, while McKenzie Butgereit and Alessa Buchner drove in the other two.
  • Allisen Martz added an insurance run with her first collegiate home run in the top of the 6th inning to make it 5-3.
  • After Calumet cut the deficit to 5-4, Mikayla Meade was able to end the 6th inning with a popout to shortstop Kailin Hurrle, leaving the potential tying run stranded on 3rd base.
  • Meade retired all three batters in the 7th inning to seal the 5-4 victory.

Notable:
  • Mikayla Meade, who came in to pitch in relief in both games, earned both wins in the circle. Over both games, the freshman pitched six total innings and racked up five strikeouts while allowing only one hit and one earned run.
  • Lexi Lieske's 19 hits (in 13 games) is tied for the 2nd most hits by a Golden Eagle over a spring break trip in the last 15 years. Tahni Bruno and Heidi Warmelink had 20 and 19 hits, respectively, over the 14-game Arizona trip in 2011.
  • Martz' home run was the 7th long ball of the week for the Golden Eagles.
  • With an RBI in each game today, McKenzie Butgereit finishes the Florida trip with a team-high 10 RBI.

What's next?
Cornerstone (6-7) will return home to Michigan this weekend. Conference play will pick up on March 25 with a home doubleheader against Rochester.
