Women's Basketball to host Rochester for single game this week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After 11 days off, Cornerstone returns to WHAC play with a matchup vs. one of the conference front-runners in receiving votes Rochester on Saturday afternoon. CU, still in search of their first conference win, will host the Warriors at 1 p.m. on Saturday for the lone game this week. Last Week Recap

The Golden Eagles played just one game prior to Thanksgiving last week and fell 74-64 on the road at Concordia after leading at the half. CU got in foul trouble, committing 24 fouls as they drop to 1-8, 0-5 WHAC on the year. This week, CU again has just one game as they host Rochester for a 1 p.m. start. 

Kubik Leading Bench Scoring

Cornerstone has really struggled to shoot the ball in the early season, averaging 59.9 points per game at a 35.6% clip. Freshman guard Olivia Kubik has shined off the bench though as she has a team second best 9.4 points per game in just 19.2 minutes per game. She leads the team in made threes this season with 11 as well on 44 attempts. 

WHAC Outlook

Through five games in WHAC play, there are still two teams yet to be beaten as Indiana Tech sits 14th in the country and 5-0 in conference and Rochester is receiving votes and 4-0 in conference. Lourdes and Cornerstone are the only two teams still looking for a conference win sitting at 0-5 in WHAC play. 

Foul Trouble

Cornerstone has seen some foul trouble in the early season as the team has committed 188 fouls this season for an average of 20.8 a game. CU has committed 25 more fouls than their opponents and seen five disqualifications through nine games. Opponents have also seen 23 more attempts at the free throw line than CU and hit 18 more than the Golden Eagles on the year.

Live Look at Rochester

Rochester is the defending WHAC Regular Season Champion after upsetting Indiana Tech and going 12-0 in conference play last year. Rochester lost the NAIA Opening Round game vs. Grand View last season, 71-65. This year, Rochester is off to another great start at 9-1, 4-0 WHAC. Similar to their men's team, Rochester has seen a ton of returning talent come back this year with eight seniors on the 16 player roster. The Warriors are an outstanding offensively, averaging 65.2 PPG to rank 13th in the NAIA. The offense can come from multiple weapons as well with five players averaging double-figures including four of their five starters. RU shoots the lights out from three, averaging 10 makes a game for a 35.7% clip. 

History vs. the Warriors

Cornerstone has lost the last seven contests with Rochester and previously won the first 13 for a 13-7 all-time record with RU. The last win came in Mol Arena, 64-59 on January 6, 2018. Last season, Cornerstone suffered a tough road loss 99-72 to the Warriors before responding with a much better performance in a 95-82 home loss. The largest margin of victory for the Golden Eagles in this matchup came in 2001, when Cornerstone won 102-18.
