Women's Basketball looks to finish strong with four WHAC games

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Coming off back-to-back victories against Northwestern Ohio and Madonna, the Cornerstone women's basketball team will wrap up the regular season with four games over the next seven days. The Golden Eagles (6-11, 3-6 WHAC) will host Lourdes on Wednesday before ending the regular season with three games in four days, with Aquinas on Saturday, Lawrence Tech on Monday, and Rochester on Tuesday.   • The Women's Basketball team has won back-to-back games for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
  • Layna Steele has double-digit points performances in both of the last two games, with 19 against Northwestern Ohio on Saturday and 10 against Madonna on Monday.
  • Cornerstone made a program record 17 three-pointers against Northwestern Ohio.
  • The team committed a season low 12 personal fouls against Northwestern Ohio.
  • Shelby Nyboer scored 11 of her 13 points against Madonna in the third quarter.
  • Allyson Richards shot 7-for-10 from the floor and totaled a team-high 16 points off the bench for CU against Madonna.
     

Senior Day

Cornerstone will celebrate Senior Day on Tuesday, February 23 when they face off against Rochester in the regular season finale. The Golden Eagles will recognize the five seniors on the roster:

  • Brooke Modderman
  • Sterling DeGayner
  • Allyson Richards
  • Shelby Nyboer

Cornerstone finds themselves with a 3-6 WHAC record heading into the final four games of the regular season. Two other teams, Lourdes and Lawrence Tech, round out the top 8 with identical 3-6 WHAC records heading into the final week. The top eight teams play in the conference tournament, which is scheduled to begin Thursday, February 25. 

Scouting Lourdes

Lourdes
  • Lourdes enters the week with a 4-9 overall, 3-6 WHAC record. Lourdes' three wins are the same opponents that Cornerstone earned their wins against: Madonna, Northwestern Ohio, and Lawrence Tech.
  • Sara Semler ranks fourth in the NAIA with a 3.6 assist-to-turnover ratio.
  • Mary Lidel leads the team in scoring with 12.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
  • The Gray Wolves have a 2-4 record on the road this season.
  • Lourdes has won four straight games against Cornerstone, most recently being a 68-59 decision in February of 2020. 

 

Scouting Aquinas

  • Aquinas enters the week with a 4-5 record – all of their games have been in conference play. 
  • Marissa Brady leads the team with an impressive 19 points per game. Brady also ranks 2nd in the nation with 3.7 blocks per game, and 6th in the nation with 13.7 rebounds per game.
  • The Saints' defeated Cornerstone 74-67 back on February 3.
  • Aquinas will take on Lawrence Tech on Wednesday before the matinee contest against Cornerstone on Saturday.
  • The Saints have won seven of the last eight games in the series against CU, with the last CU victory being the 64-57 upset in the 2018 WHAC Quarterfinal. 

Scouting Lawrence Tech

  • Lawrence Tech enters the week with a 5-9 overall, 3-6 WHAC record. 
  • Cornerstone defeated the Blue Devils 80-61 on February 1. 
  • Lawrence Tech dropped all three of their games last week, with losses against Indiana Tech, Concordia, and Rochester. The team will travel to Aquinas and Madonna this week before hosting Cornerstone on Monday, February 22nd. 
  • Kendall Fisher leads the team with 14.4 points per game, while Teryn Kline is averaging 13.8. 

Scouting Rochester

  • Rochester enters the week 9-1 overall with a perfect 8-0 record in WHAC play. 
  • The Warriors comfortably beat the Golden Eagles 99-72 on February 6. Five different players scored in double digits for RU in that game.
  • Delaney Bolles leads the team with 17.3 points per game while Jacara Thompson is averaging 17.1.
  • Cianna Gloster is averaging 9.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. 
  • The Warriors are averaging 77.8 points per game in conference play this season.
