GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles continued their season on Tuesday when they hosted Bethel in a non-conference doubleheader. A six-run sixth inning from Bethel brought game one to a 13-2 close by way of mercy rule. The Golden Eagles had their turn for a six-run sixth inning in game two on their way to a 12-8 victory. Cornerstone (4-2) will be back in action on Friday afternoon when they host Spring Arbor.
Game one: Bethel 13 – Cornerstone 2
- After Bethel took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, McKenzie Butgereit evened the score in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to center field.
- The Pilots plated two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
- A two-RBI double in the fourth inning helped Bethel double their score and take a 6-1 lead.
- Kaitlin Johnson began the bottom of the fourth inning with a triple off the wall in left field. Morgan Murat drove her home with an RBI single to make it 6-2.
- The Pilots tacked on another un in the fifth inning and six more in the sixth inning, ending the game after six innings due to mercy rule with a 13-2 score.
Game two: Bethel 8 – Cornerstone 12
- Kaitlin Johnson got out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the first inning unharmed by closing the frame with a strikeout and a popout.
- Bethel loaded the bases again in the second inning and was able to capitalize by plating three runs on a bases-clearing double.
- After Bailey Anson led off the bottom of the second inning with a double, Sydney Carr drove her in with a base hit to left field to make the score 3-1.
- The Pilots loaded the bases again in the fourth inning and tacked on another run, making it 4-1.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, Sydney Carr, Kailin Hurrle, and Aliyah Lemmer had back-to-back-to-back doubles, with Lemmer's driving in two runs.
- Alicia Ontiveros followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
- McKenzie Butgereit capped off inning with a two-RBI single to give CU a 6-4 lead.
- With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, the Pilots rallied for four runs to regain the lead, 8-6.
- Cornerstone exploded for six runs in the sixth inning that featured a sacrifice fly from McKenzie Butgereit, an RBI double from Bailey Anson, a two-RBI double for Morgan Murat, and a two-run home run for Sydney Carr to give the Golden Eagles a 12-8 lead.
- Bethel loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, bringing the potential tying run to the plate, but Kaitlin Johnson got a groundout to seal the 12-8 victory.
Notes and Numbers:
- In her first two games at the collegiate level, Sydney Carr went a combined 4-for-5 with three RBI, a double, a home run, and two runs scored.
- In six games this season, McKenzie Butgereit shows three multi-hit games, and at least one hit in each game. She's also had an RBI in five straight games, including three in game two this evening.
- Kaitlin Johnson went the distance for CU, pitching all seven innings in game two, surrendering 13 hits and five earned runs while racking up six strikeouts.
- Eleven different Golden Eagles tallied hits in game two.

Cornerstone has two more home non-conference doubleheaders slated for this week, with Spring Arbor on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saint Francis on Saturday at 2 p.m.
