Men’s Soccer upsets NAIA Top 10 UNOH on Senior Day

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone shocked number eight Northwestern Ohio on Senior Day, earning a 2-0 victory for the programs first ever win vs. an NAIA Top 10 team. Senior Logan Johns played goalkeeper for the first time ever and pitched a shutout with nine saves to power CU to the win. Golden Eagles end the regular season at 5-5-1 and will now prepare for the WHAC Tournament that begins on Saturday, April 10. The tournament pairings and game times will be released later this week at cugoldeneagles.com.

The Highlights:
  • The game got off to a slow start as neither team had a stat in the first three minutes.
  • UNOH recorded the first shot in the fourth minute that was saved by first time goal keeper Logan Johns
  • The Racers dominated possession with 11 shots in the first half, but only five where on net with Logan Johns making five saves to keep the game scoreless at half.
  • In the second half, Cornerstone put some pressure on UNOH and found the net in the 52nd minute as Nate Kaercher used Allan Barrientos in a give and go and found the net for his fourth goal of the season. This was CU's first shot of the game.
  • After the goal, Cornerstone went back on the defense as the back line made things difficult for the Racers. Caleb Griffith and Jeshua Boggs did not allow any easy shots and Logan Johns continued to save any shot that made it to him in net to remain on top 1-0.
  • On a counter attack in the 84th minute, Nate Kaercher found some space and laid a perfect cross on the ground to David Mawi who was able to back heel the ball past the UNOH keeper and provide some insurance and give the Golden Eagles the 2-0 lead.
  • Cornerstone stifled UNOH the remainder of the second half, not allowing another shot, earning the upset of the number eight team in the country, 2-0.

By the Numbers:
4 – Nate Kaercher is the first CU player to score four or more goals since the 2017 Cornerstone season.
