Women’s Soccer season comes to an end with WHAC Semifinal loss at AQ

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles traveled to the WHAC Regular Season Champion, top seed, and NAIA number 17 Aquinas on Wednesday evening and after a 38-minute rain delay just 10-minutes into the match, CU fell 2-0, ending their season. Cornerstone gave up a goal in each half to fall 2-0 which ends their season with a 6-4-1 overall record. Updates regarding the offseason and the 2021 fall schedule can be found at cugoldeneagles.com this summer and on the CU women's soccer social media pages.

The Highlights:
  • Cornerstone and AQ got about 10 minutes of the game in before lightning struck near the AQ campus causing a 38-minute delay in the contest.
  • 19 minutes after the delay, Aquinas, who was on the attack most of the first half, netted their first goal as the WHAC Player of the Year Hannah Crum scored on an assist from Flippa Struxsjo to make it 1-0.
  • Mikayla Johnson did a good job the remainder of the first half in net to keep the damage from getting worse, making six saves on AQ's 16 first half shots.
  • In the 65th minute, there was a foul on Cornerstone's Laura Helder inside the 18-year box that led to an Aquinas penalty kick.
  • Flippa Struxsjo buried the ball in the bottom right corner to give the Saints the 2-0 advantage.
  • Fouls continued to pick up the remainder of the second half as neither team could find a rhythm.
  • In the 89th minute Phoebe LaCroix recorded the only shot for the Golden Eagles, but it was saved by Aquinas keeper Braeleigh McCoy as CU fell 2-0.

By the Numbers:
22-1 – Cornerstone was outshot 22-1 on the game.
17-8 – CU was called for a season high 17 fouls, while Aquinas was whistled for just eight.
1 – Ariana Garcia of Aquinas picked up the lone yellow card in the game in the 90th minute.
