GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a weekend road trip to Ohio where the Golden Eagle men's soccer team earned a split with Shawnee State and Ohio Christian, the team returns home for the first time to play Olivet Nazarene on Wednesday, August 25 at 3 p.m. CU and ONU have met each of the last four seasons and the Golden Eagles have yet to record a win going 0-2-2 in those matches. Live video and stats will be available for the contest at cugoldeneagles.com/watch.
Ohio Recap: Fun and All
Not only did the Golden Eagles get to play two games in Ohio where they fell 2-1 late at Shawnee State and dominated Ohio Christian 5-0, they got the opportunity to attend a Columbus Crew MLS soccer match, the former home of Head Coach
Steve Herdsman. Herdsman and the team were able to take a tour and explore the facility as well as watch the match before returning home this week for training.
Knapp Scores Twice
In recent years, Cornerstone has seen their success come on the defensive end, however through two games, CU has seen six goals scored from five different players. Freshman
Boston Knapp scored two at Ohio Christian, the first player to do so since
Nate Kaercher early last season against Rochester. Through 13 games in 2020, Cornerstone had just 10 players find the net, while through two games in 2021, the team has seen five players score.
Tied a Herdsman Record
Sixth year Head Coach
Steve Herdsman has now seen is team score five goals on four different occasions over his six years as Head Coach, which is a record under his leadership. The last time CU scored more than five was on August 31, 2015 at Fisher College when the team won 7-0.
Scouting Olivet Nazarene
Olivet Nazarene opened the 2021 campaign vs. Lourdes and fell 1-0 to the fellow WHAC school in rather shocking fashion. ONU starting keeper Mike Giannotta was given a red card early in the second half that forced the Tigers to play a man down. The card heavily impacts Wednesday's game as well, as Giannotta will be suspended for the contest at Cornerstone, leaving a trio of freshman keepers to choose from on the roster to play in net. Despite the early loss, Olivet is one of the best teams in the CCAC and is often ranked within the NAIA Top 25 as they went 11-4-1 last season. Sophomore Max Jasper is the man to watch for ONU as he scored 17 goals with four assists in his freshman campaign. The Tigers averaged over three goals a game in 2020 as well, ranking 13
th in the NAIA.
