Women’s Soccer overcomes early deficit for win at Indiana Tech

Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind.  – Amber Nicholson was the hero for the Golden Eagles in their road test at Indiana Tech scoring the game winning goal to give CU the 2-1 victory. CU trailed 1-0 early but saw Skylar Scholten score right at the end of the half and saw Amber Nicholson score right at the beginning of the second half to pull out the victory. Cornerstone continues a tough road stretch at NAIA ranked and rival Aquinas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they are now 5-4-2, 2-2-1 WHAC on the year. 
 
What you need to know?
  • Scotland Phillip early in the contest saw a break away opportunity for a shot but missed wide.
  • Just a few seconds later, Elizabeth Kollen saw an opportunity on net and missed wide on the other side of the goal. 
  • After Cornerstone maintained much of the offensive possession, Indiana Tech would get a corner kick. On the corner in the 23rd minute, Olivia Sherman scored to put the Warriors up 1-0. 
  • With just over 12 minutes to play in the first half, Indiana Tech nearly found another goal but a diving save by keeper Hope Steenwyk kept the deficit at one.
  • Right before the half, Amber Nicholson took a left footed shot that nearly found the net. Tech made a diving save to keep the shutout active. 
  • A minute later, Skylar Scholten saw a similar opportunity and was able to find the net at the 41-minute mark to tie the match 1-1. 
  • At the half the two sides sat tied, 1-1. 
  • Cornerstone got off to a strong start to begin the second half, as Amber Nicholson found the net in the 47th minute off a beautiful through pass from Jada VanTol to take their first lead of the game 2-1. 
  • Cornerstone carried momentum after the goal maintaining much of the second half possession.
  • Doubling up the Warriors in total shots, Cornerstone came out with a 2-1 road victory at Indiana Tech. 
 
By the Numbers
2 – Hope Steenwyk only had to make two saves on the day as CU dominated much of the possession. 
16-8 – Cornerstone doubled-up Indiana Tech with 16 shots on the day. 
4 – Amber Nicholson is now tied for the team lead in goals yet again with four on the year. 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone travels to Aquinas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a big match with an NAIA Top 25 opponent and a rival.
