GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles are set to head to Des Moines, Iowa this weekend for a big open that will see a lot of talent in action hosted by Grand View. Action will take place all day on Saturday, November 12 with live video and statistics links available
HERE.
First Tournament Recap
The young second year Golden Eagle program opened their season at Adrian last weekend and took home fifth place as a team with a second-place individual finish from 125 pounder
Trevor Marsman and multiple sixth place finishes. Head Coach
Chris Williamson stated in a recap of the first invite, that "it was great to see a group of freshmen and sophomores able to compete against a full field of seasoned veterans and take fifth overall. There were a lot of tradition rich teams at Adrian, and we competed well." Cornerstone is still not quite at a full roster in just year two, but they have already taken a huge jump from year one to year two.
New Standouts
Noah Anderson and
Luke Jaworski were guys that stood out in the opening tournament. Anderson a senior competed in just two matches last year while Jaworski is a true freshman from Highland, Michigan. Jaworski showed a lot of fight said Head Coach
Chris Williamson, recording a pin late in the third period of his last match when he was down six points. The coaching staff has been very encouraged by the grit of CU in the early season to not count themselves out late in big matches.
Opens vs. Duals
Cornerstone competes in their second open/invite this weekend as they prepare for their first dual at home on Wednesday vs. Lourdes for Pack the House Night. The opens give a lot of data before going into the dual season. These events offer a lot of matches in a tournament style structure that are much more individual based competition. This prepares CU for a much more team-based competition by nailing down the potential problems/weaknesses and helping the coaching staff put together the best matchups for team play. This year the WHAC is doing full standings based on conference duals for the first time.
What to Look for at Grand View
Coach
Chris Williamson said "it is plain and simple. We will see some of the best guys in the country there. It will give us eyes on the guys we need to beat at the NAIA National Tournament and give our guys opportunity against NCAA DI programs like UNI, Iowa, Iowa State etc."
