Women’s Basketball falls just short at NCAA DII Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a game among former rivals, the Golden Eagles hung close with the now NCAA DII Davenport Panthers all game but fell short 82-71. CU saw two players score 20+ as Kennedy Hederop had 24 and Mackenzie Stien had 21 in the loss. Stephanie Ainsworth added 10 boards in the post as the team moves back to .500 overall at 7-7. WHAC play is all that is left for Cornerstone this season as they come home to host Rochester on Wednesday, January 4 for their next game. 
 
Game Flow:
  • Cornerstone got off to a very slow start offensively as the Panthers went up 7-0. Jaci Walker hit a three at the 6:01 mark to increase the advantage to seven.
  • The first player to score for CU was Olivia Kubik off the bench, hitting a three at the 4:43 mark left in the first quarter. 
  • After trailing by as many as 10 in the first quarter, Cornerstone ended the period on a 9-2 run to get within three at 17-14. Mackenzie Stien hit a huge and-one bucket in the run. 
  • Kennedy Helderop took over the second quarter from behind the arc. She hit two threes to put CU within one at 25-24. 
  • Mackenzie Stien later hit a free throw and a layup to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game, 27-25. 
  • After Davenport regained the lead, Olivia Kubik hit a three putting the Golden Eagles within one again. The Panthers responded with a three of their own to end the half as they held a 34-30 edge at halftime. 
  • Both teams were held scoreless for the first minute to start the third. Mackenzie Stien put the first second half points on the board for CU with a layup inside the paint. 
  • Stephanie Ainsworth hit two free throws that tied the game back up at 34.
  • DU had yet another response to the Cornerstone run, with a 5-0 run started by a three from Alexa Kolnitys. 
  • Rebounding and jump shooting helped Davenport advance their lead back to 10. Jaci Walker hit another three that made it 48-38 with 3:25 to go in the third. 
  • More threes would give Davenport their largest lead of 13 on two different occasions in the third quarter. Three free throws from the aggressive Mackenzie Stien put Cornerstone down 10 with 10 minutes to play, 55-45. 
  • The foul line was a factor throughout the high scoring fourth quarter, as the Panthers moved their advantage to 15 with 4:54 to play. 
  • Davenport could not miss in the fourth quarter, continuing to add to their lead in the final minutes. Down 18, Kennedy Helderop scored eight straight points to help Cornerstone end the game on a 10-2 run. It was too-little-too-late however as Davenport held on to win 82-71. 
 
 
By the numbers:
43-29 – Cornerstone was outrebounded 43-29 on the day. 
8/10/6 – Despite scoring just eight points, Stephanie Ainsworth added a career high six assists to go along with 10 boards for her closest ever effort to a triple-double.
45/71 – Kennedy Helderop and Mackenzie Stien scored 45 of the Golden Eagles 71 points on the evening.  
 
 
What's next? 
Cornerstone will play WHAC games the rest of the way out, as they host Rochester on Wednesday, January 4 at 5:30 p.m. for their next contest.
