ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Golden Eagles jumped right into the 2022-23 indoor season with three NAIA auto qualifiers and two provisional marks as well as many strong collegiate debuts and personal bests at the GVSU Holiday Open.
Ashley Verplank,
Anna Martin, and
Colten Covington were the three CU athletes to earn auto standards in the first meet of the year. Cornerstone will now hit a long break before returning to Grand Valley in early January for their next meet.
Men's Results:
A pair of freshmen got the highlights started on the men's side with top 10 marks in program history in the 60m hurdles.
Patrick Adams ran an 8.62 to finish third all-time, while
Phoenix Velthouse ran an 8.71 for seventh all-time.
In the 60m, sophomore
Seth Stoltz started his career day with a PR of 7.02 to move to sixth all-time on CU's indoor list. He later added a PR in the long jump of 6.79m to move to third all-time on that indoor list for two massive personal bests on the day.
Ryan Shinabery shined in his collegiate debut in the throws area with a mark of 13.61m to move right into the top 10 all-time at 5
th in CU program history in the shot put. Later in the evening, Shinabery went 14.38m in the weight throw to debut 10
th all-time in program history.
The night ended with
Colten Covington in the 5k. Covington cruised to a heat victory with a time of 14:29.22. This mark earns an auto standard and puts him second all-time in CU program history.
Women's Results:
Due to multiple 5k heats, Cornerstone saw action start before the official race time with a few competitors in the 5k open. Senior
Cammie McConnell highlighted the action getting an NAIA provisional mark of 18:14.56 to open the day.
Later in the day,
Sara Genzink went wire-to-wire in the women's 400m to earn a PR of 59.82 and move to eighth all-time in indoor program history.
In the pole vault, the dynamic duo of
Ashley Verplank and
Morgan Vargo did not waste anytime qualifying for NAIA Nationals. Verplank went 3.65m to earn an auto standard, while Vargo went 3.50m for a provisional standard.
Anna Martin ended the women's evening with a strong entrance to the indoor track & field season earning a time of 17:20.25 in the 5k. This put her second in CU program history and earned an NAIA auto standard in her first race post cross country season.
What's Next?
CU heads back to Grand Valley in 2023 as they will hit the Christmas break for nearly a month before returning to competition.
