Men’s Volleyball wins program’s first conference match at Lawrence Tech

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – For the first time in the short Golden Eagle program history, CU earned a WHAC victory taking Lawrence Tech down in four sets on the road, 25-21, 25-18, 25-27, 28-26. The duo of David Galanes and Max Hernandez recorded 18 kills each to lead the way, while setter Patrick Voloch recorded a double-double with 40 assists and 14 digs in the win. Cornerstone looks to carry the momentum back home vs. (5) Lourdes on Friday at 7 p.m. 
 
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3 Lawrence Tech – 1 (25-21, 25-18, 25-27, 28-26)
  • Cornerstone got off to a bit of a slow start, falling behind 6-3 in set one with two early ball handling errors. 
  • A Brunno Peres service ace and David Galanes kill helped Cornerstone to quickly tie set one at six. 
  • The two teams traded points until a 4-1 run from CU put them on top by three. Max Hernandez, Hubert Sliwinski, and David Galanes all recorded kills in the run. 
  • Cornerstone would hold the lead and take set one 25-21. 
  • The Golden Eagles road the momentum into set two, as back-to-back kills from David Galanes put them on top 10-7 and forced Lawrence Tech into a timeout. 
  • After the LTU timeout, CU scored three more points with a kill from Max Hernandez to cap off a 5-0 run and force the Blue Devils into their second timeout. 
  •  Lawrence Tech responded with a 5-0 run to cut it to 17-14, but Cornerstone pulled away scoring six of the last eight points, winning the set on a David Galanes and Hubert Sliwinski block, 25-18. 
  • Neither team could garnish a large lead in set three at 11-8, as Cornerstone went on top by a set high three points after kills from David Galanes and Max Hernandez
  • Lawrence Tech responded with a 3-0 run to tie things at 11. Neither team would lead by more than two the rest of the way.
  • The two sides needed a little extra volleyball to finish set three as Cornerstone had two match points that Lawrence Tech survived. LTU recorded back-to-back blocks on the CU attack to win set three 27-25 and force the match to continue. 
  • The Blue Devils road the momentum into set four using back-to-back kills from Felix Perez to go on top 7-3.
  • Cornerstone responded with a 6-2 run to tie things at nine. Brunno Perez recorded three kills in the run. 
  • The two sides traded the lead before Cornerstone again surged for a 5-1 run to go on top 18-14 and make LTU call timeout. 
  • For every Cornerstone run, Lawrence Tech had a response. LTU used a 4-0 run to tie things back up at 18, a 3-0 run to tie things at 22 and again forced extra volleyball in set four. 
  • Facing set point, Cornerstone refused to let this one get away, scoring three straight points capped off by a block from Joshua Beaumont and Brunno Peres to win set four 28-26 and take the match. 
 
By the Numbers 
18 – 18 kills are career highs for both David Galanes and Max Hernandez
14 – Alex Hekman recorded a career high 14 digs to tie a team lead in that category.
40/14 – Patrick Voloch earned his third career double-double with a career high 40 assists and 14 digs. 
.225 – Cornerstone hit .225 on the day with an outstanding 15 kill one error first set.

Cornerstone returns home for their second match against (5) Lourdes on Friday, February 11 at 7 p.m.
