Softball sweeps Cleary in road double-header

HOWELL, Mich.  – For the first time in recordable Cornerstone program history, the Golden Eagles move to 4-0 in WHAC play with a sweep of Cleary, 11-7 and 4-3 on the road. Allisen Martz and Jolie Groeneveld led the way, while both starting pitchers went a complete game to move to 9-7-1, 4-0 WHAC on the year. As of right now, Cornerstone will be back on the road at Roosevelt on Wednesday for a non-conference double-header. Game One: Cornerstone – 11 Cleary – 7
  • Cornerstone was able to score four in the top of the first at Cleary, helped along by a pair of early errors from the Cougars. Allisen Martz hit a two RBI single to open the scoring which was followed by a two RBI single from Sydney Tilma to make it 4-0. 
  • Cleary got one back in the bottom of the first after a lead-off single came around to score on a stolen base, advancement, and sacrifice fly to make it 4-1. 
  • Allisen Martz continued her strong day, adding to the scoring in the third inning with a bomb of a homerun to center field that scored Sydney Carr and increased the Golden Eagles edge to 6-1. 
  • Cleary recorded a huge third inning to tie the game, scoring five runs on an error and a pair of RBI singles to tie the game at six. 
  • Cornerstone immediately responded after a two out error extended the inning with RBI hits from Sydney Carr, Allisen Martz, and Sydney Tilma that put CU back on top 9-6. 
  • The next two innings were scoreless as CU led by three entering the final inning. 
  • Jolie Groeneveld added two more insurance runs with a two RBI single in the seventh to make it 11-6. 
  • Kaitlin Johnson returned for the seventh inning, and was able to close out the game after giving up a lead-off HR giving CU the 11-7 win in game one. 
 
Game Two: Cornerstone – 4 Cleary - 3
  • Cornerstone carried momentum into game two, as Jolie Groeneveld hit a home run to center field to make it 1-0. 
  • Mackenzie Nagelhout added a second run on a groundout in the third that scored Jolie Groeneveld and made it 2-0. 
  • Starter Mikayla Meade gave up just one hit through the first two innings of work. In the third, Cleary finally got to Meade and recorded a double and single to lead-off the inning that later scored on a groundout to bring their deficit to one run. Meade got out of the inning with a lineout to keep the CU 2-1 lead. 
  • In the fourth, Cleary took their first of the series with an RBI groundout and an infield single to go up 3-2. 
  • The Golden Eagles did not relinquish the lead for long, responding with two runs in the top of the fourth with a Jolie Groeneveld RBI single and a McKenzie Butgereit RBI double that made it 4-3. 
  • Starter Mikayla Meade settled back in and went 1-2-3 in the circle in the final two innings to give CU the 4-3 win in game two. 
 
By the Numbers:
9 – Allisen Martz (5) and Jolie Groeneveld (4) combined for nine of the teams 15 RBI on the day. 
2 – Starters Kaitlin Johnson and Mikayala Meade both pitched complete games and were the only two pitchers for CU on the day. 
2 – Jolie Groeneveld stole two bases in game two to lead the team. 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone right now is scheduled for a non-conference double-header at Roosevelt tomorrow. Stay tuned however on the status of those contests with rain and snow projected in the Chicagoland forecast.
