SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Golden Eagles advanced to day two of the WHAC Tournament after a wild opening round double-header, falling 4-1 in game one and winning 9-8 in game two on a ninth inning walk-off single from
Jocelyn Hernandez. Cornerstone earned their first WHAC Tournament win since 2016 over Madonna as they are now 17-19-1 and will look to stay alive tomorrow at noon against the five seed Aquinas back at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio.
Game One: UNOH – 4 Cornerstone - 1
- The first inning saw multiple base runners on both sides as CU earned two walks but was unable to score. UNOH was able to find a two out run after three hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 1-0 lead.
- In the top of the second, Racer starter Carlie Hanes started to find the zone getting the Cornerstone batters 1-2-3 to keep the 1-0.
- With two outs in the bottom of the second, Shayla Munyan roped a double for Northwestern Ohio down the right field, but CU starter Kaitlin Johnson stranded her to keep the deficit at one.
- In the bottom of the third, UNOH's three and four hole hitters hit back-to-back solo home runs to left field to lead off the inning and go on top 3-0.
- Sydney Carr walked in the top of the fourth and pinch runner Shylin Robirds advanced to second with one out. The next two CU batters struck out looking to stay down three.
- After four innings of work giving up three runs, Kaitlin Johnson was relieved by freshman Hanna DePoy for the bottom of the fifth. Depoy allowed runners to second and third but got a fly out to end things still trailing 3-0.
- In the sixth, Mackenzie Nagelhout walked and advanced to third on a foul out and error by UNOH in left field. She later scored on a Delaney Wilson sacrifice fly for the Golden Eagles first run.
- Northwestern Ohio got the run right back in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double after an error advanced her to second to go back on top by three, 4-1.
- Cornerstone had no answer in the seventh as Carlie Hanes went a complete game to give the Racers a 4-1 victory in game one of the WHAC Tournament.
Game Two: Cornerstone – 9 Lawrence Tech – 8
- Cornerstone found their offense early in game one as the home team as Jolie Groeneveld singled, stole a base, and later scored on a groundout to make it 1-0.
- A pair of two out walks from Alyssa Braam cost CU in the top of the second as it loaded the bases and allowed Callie Tatum to hit a two RBI single in the top of the second to give Lawrence Tech the lead.
- Walks again hurt Alyssa Braam in the top of the fourth as two of them loaded the bases. LTU hit an RBI single off the glove of McKenzie Butgereit that added a run and ended Braam's time on the mound. Mikayla Meade came in as relief with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the fourt, trailing 3-1.
- Another single up the middle scored two more in the fourth for the Blue Devils as they increased their advantage to 5-1.
- Cornerstone found some offensive life in the fifth after an LTU error extended things. Mackenzie Nagelhout found some space and hit an RBI single to score Allisen Martz and make it 5-2. Jolie Groeneveld scored on a groundout later in the inning to cut the deficit down to two.
- The Golden Eagles continued to chip away in the sixth with an RBI pinch hit single from Molly Poole off the LTU reliever Grace Schriber. Lawrence Tech again went to the bullpen bringing in Clover Brandt with one out and runners at the corners leading 5-4.
- Allisen Martz grounded out off the new LTU reliever, scoring Bailey Anson and tying the game at five.
- Jolie Groeneveld was the hero in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a two-run home run to center field that put CU in the lead for the first time since the first inning at 7-5.
- Lawrence Tech put two runners on with no outs which led to Mikayla Meade's exit and Kaitlin Johnson returned to the circle looking for the save. With two outs and down to their final strike on two occasions, the Blue Devils recorded two clutch hits that scored three and put them back on top 8-7.
- Cornerstone tied the game in the bottom of the seventh in a wild turn of events with a dropped pop fly that was called an infield fly rule. Sydney Carr tried to score on the play and the catcher was not on the base allowing her to score the tying run and force extra innings at 8-8.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Allisen Martz led things off with a single which forced Clover Brandt out of the game and brought back starting pitcher Grace Roeske in the game. Roeske shut CU down to keep the game tied at eight.
- The offense picked back up in the bottom of the ninth with a lead-off double from Sydney Carr. After Carr advanced to third on an out, LTU chose to intentionally walk the next two batters to bring Jocelyn Hernandez up. Hernandez hit a grounder back to the pitcher that was unable to be fielded cleanly allowing Carr to score to win the game.
