Women's Basketball rebounded with a solid victory over UNOH 82-71

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone started the second half of conference play against the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers as they dominated from start to finish winning 82-71. Cornerstone got out running and their defense was the difference maker in the game as UNOH struggled to shoot from the field. Jaxi Long led the way for the Golden Eagles scoring a team high 17 as Stephanie Ainsworth followed with one of those typical Ainsworth games with 16 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double. Cornerstone will hit the road on Wednesday, January 18 to face off against Madonna.
 
 
Game Highlights:
  • First Quarter
    • Jaxi Long got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles making a nice floater in the paint to get the momentum going for the Golden Eagles.
    • Cornerstone and UNOH have been trading baskets and, and-one baskets as both teams are tied 7-7 with six-minutes remaining in the first quarter. Maddison Fulks with a nice lefty layup.
    • Cornerstone extended their lead to four, 13-9 after Parish Hudson made a nice drive and score and Olivia Kubik makes a pair of free throws as their defense has picked up, disrupting the UNOH offense.
    • UNOH answered with a quick 4-0 run to close the gap, but a Maddison Fulks floater with 0:25 seconds left stopped the run to give Cornerstone the 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Second Quarter
    • Cornerstone used the first two-minutes of the second quarter to go on a 10-0 run as they went perfect 5-5 from the field as Layna Steele drills back-to-back jumpers. Stephanie Ainsworth's defense has altered every UNOH shot around the rim.
    • Jaylee Long drills the first three pointer of the game for the Golden Eagles as they extended their lead 32-15.
    •  UNOH responded by going on a quick 10-2 run as they have found easy baskets around the rim as they break down the press. Jada Haines and Alysia Lawson have led the way for the Racers.
    • Cornerstone's offense has been too much for UNOH in the first half as Jaxi Long drills a three for the Golden Eagles. Kennedy Helderop follows with a three of her own right before the buzzer to give Cornerstone the 44-25 lead at halftime.
  • Third Quarter
    • UNOH came out strong to start the second half as they got off to a 6-0 run before Stephanie Ainsworth stopped that run with a nice turn around layup. Mackenzie Stein followed that up with a layup of her own as Cornerstone leads 48-31.
    • Cornerstone and UNOH have been trading threes as Ana Montero drills two in a row for the Racers as Jaxi Long makes one of her own.
    • Cornerstone has stayed aggressive on the offense and defensive ends grabbing offensive rebounds creating extra shots as well as causing turnovers not allowing UNOH to get good looks.
    • UNOH used the last minutes of the third quarter getting out and running creating easy baskets. Stephanie Ainsworth hit a nice jumper off the glass to give Cornerstone the 63-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • Jaxi Long has continued her great game as she drills a three to start the scoring in the fourth quarter, her third of the game.
    • Maddison Fulks has caught fire in the early minutes of the fourth as she nails back-to-back threes for the Golden Eagles, upping their lead 72-51.
    • UNOH has gotten to the hoop easier this quarter making easy baskets and knocking their down free throws. Mackenzie Stein has answered every time for the Golden Eagles with a nice turnaround layup. Cornerstone leads 76-59 with 4:15 remaining in the quarter.
    • UNOH has gone on a run as Cornerstone has gotten a little cold from the field as Cornerstone's lead is down to 11, 77-66.
    • Both teams scored from the free throw line down the stretch as Cornerstone would go on to win 82-

23/7 – Cornerstone had 23 assists on 31 made field goals to seven turnovers for the game.
44.9% - Cornerstone shot 44.9% from the field to help propel them to the victory.
16/10 – Stephanie Ainsworth recorded another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
