11/1/2023 8:25:00 PM

ALLENDALE, Mich. – After over 30 years of no varsity wrestling program at Grand Valley, they returned to action and Cornerstone was able to be the first team to face them. After some early thrilling light weight victories for the Golden Eagles, GVSU dominated the heavier weights to take the match on team points, 30-12. CU opens the year 0-1 in dual play but looks to build off the match as they enter invitational play on Saturday at Messiah in Pennsylvania.

Grand Valley State – 30 #RV Cornerstone - 12

125 – #2 Trevor Marsman
Trevor Marsman def. Aaron Lucio by decision – 10-7

A first period takedown put Grand Valley on top early with the new three-point take down rules. Lucio would lead throughout the period despite an escape later in the first period. Marsman and Lucio got in a scramble right at the end of the first period, but time ended prior to either side being able to see points awarded. Lucio recorded a second takedown in the second period to lead 6-3.

As Marsman typically does, he found a way in the final minute, recording a takedown and four-point near fall in the final seconds to flip the script and earn the 10-7 decision in the first match of the night.

133 – Devan Johnson
Collin Twigg def. Devan Johnson by fall - 4:41

Twigg would get the better of Devan Johnson, tallying a takedown in each of the first two periods that Johnson was unable to get out of. After riding time continued to accumulate, Twigg was able to flip Johnson to his back and earn the pin right before the end of the second period.

141 – Ian Boden
Ian Boden def. Jak Keller by decision – 14-8

The freshman Boden got his first taste of collegiate wrestling and looked to be in a solid position early, getting Keller on his back. Keller was able to get out of it though and earn a takedown just before the two went out of bounds, to lead 3-0 at the end of the first period. Boden responded with a takedown early in the second period to tie the match. Keller immediately escaped though to regain the advantage. Boden again fought from behind to get a second takedown to lead 6-4 after two.

In the third period, Keller was able to get a takedown just before going out of bounds to tie the match at seven. A quick escape from Boden though would prove to be the difference as he commanded the final minute of action to win 14-8.

149 – Luke Jaworski
Chris Donathan def. Luke Jaworski by tech fall – 20-3

Less than a year after being diagnosed with brain cancer, Jaworski returned to the mat for his first action against Donathan. Donathan would get the better of Jawaorski with a first period tech fall victory, 20-3.

157 – #18 Thade Radosa
Thade Radosa def. Caden Jacobs by decision – 9-5

The two sides felt each other out early in the 157lbs match, going scoreless through the first period. In the second period, Jacobs started down and after Radosa survived the first two escape attempts, Jacobs was able to get out of it. Jacobs then got a takedown to lead 4-0 after two periods. Radosa recorded a big reversal to start the third for his first points, He then allowed an escape to give himself a chance for a tying takedown and got just that with 45 seconds to go.

In the final 10 seconds, Radosa was able to get Jacobs to his back for a four-point near fall to win the match 9-5 by decision.

165 – Joe Lashuay
Joe Lashuay def. Trammel Robinson by decision – 11-6

In the first period, Lashuay looked to be in trouble but was able to flip the script and earn the first takedown. Robinson responded with an escape and quick takedown of his own to lead 4-3. In the second, Lashuay started to take over. He was able to escape and before either side even went to their feet got on top for a takedown to lead 8-4.

Lashuay clinched the match with another takedown in the middle of the third to win by decision.

174 – Cooper Mansfield
Joshua Kenny def. Cooper Mansfield by tech fall – 15-0

Both wrestlers came out with heavy hands trying to create early points. It would be Kenny who would get the first takedown a minute in though, and Mansfield was unable to get out of it with multiple near fall points being earned for a quick tech fall victory for GVSU.

184 – Brady Heckathorn
Seth Konynenbelt def. Brady Heckathorn by tech fall – 15-0

A rare senior in Konynenbelt on the new Grand Valley program took on freshman Heckathorn and earned early first period points with a takedown. Like the match before him, he was able to get near fall points before Heckathorn could get an escape earning a tech fall.

197 – Jackson Turner
Wyatt Miller def. Jackson Turner by fall – 3:16

Miller was another Laker that got an early takedown and once again the Golden Eagles were unable to get out of the early damage. Turner was able to stay on his stomach throughout most of the first period. Right at the end of the first though, Miller got a near fall that put him up big. He took the momentum right into the second period earning a fall seconds in.

285 – #17 Sterling McLaughlin
Owen Hawley def. Sterling McLaughlin by decision – 5-4

The two big men were working hard early with neither side being able to get an advantage. After the first period the score stayed 0-0. McLaughlin started down in the second period and was able to roll his way to an escape to lead 1-0. McLaughlin added a takedown after some blood time to lead 4-0. Hawley responded right at the end of the second period with an escape and a takedown to tie the match at four going into the final two minutes.

Hawley chose down in the third and was able to get an escape for the lead. McLaughlin nearly got a takedown to take the match but was unable to do so losing 5-4.
