Men’s Volleyball sees multiple career highs in five-set thriller over Bethel

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles and Pilots traded every set, but it would be Cornerstone who came on top with a 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-27, 15-13) victory over the first-year Bethel program on Saturday afternoon. Cornerstone makes it a 2-0 weekend as they improve to 10-3, 5-3 WHAC with career high's from Brunno Peres, Kyi Jagorin, and Patrick Voloch on the day. CU will have virtually a week off before their next game when they host Life on Friday, February 24 at 7 p.m. EST.

Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3 Bethel – 2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-27, 15-13)

Set One:
  • The energy began with a big block from Hubert Sliwinski and Patrick Voloch that put CU on top 9-7 early.
  • A 5-1 Golden Eagle run increased the CU advantage to 15-10 behind a kill from Landon Waltz and Andrew Galanes
  • Landon Waltz continued his strong first set with another kill that put CU up 19-12.
  • Bethel tried to work their way back into the set, but it was too-little-too-late, as Andrew Galanes put the ball away on fourth set point opportunity for CU to win 25-21.
Set Two:
  • Momentum carried into set two as David Galanes tallied a service ace, and Hubert Sliwinski and Brunno Peres each recorded a kill to go on top 4-1.
  • Patrick Voloch in on the kill action with one of his own to increase the advantage to 8-3.
  • Bethel responded with a 5-0 run to tie the set at 12. A block from Marcos Henrike and Erik Malek was a big point on a long rally that helped Bethel respond.
  • Later the Pilots would put together a 4-0 run that gave them a 17-14 advantage.
  • Tuna Konukcu recorded the final kill as Bethel evened the match with a 25-21 set two victory.
Set Three:
  • Bethel took an early 12-10 lead in set three. Cornerstone responded with a 5-0 run to lead 15-12. CU spread the ball out well in the run with three different players recording kills to go along with a David Galanes service ace.
  • Patrick Voloch and Joshua Beaumont later combined for a huge block after Bethel tried to get back into it, taking a 20-15 advantage.
  • Another block, this time by Brunno Peres and Joshua Beaumont, secured set three 25-21 in favor of the Golden Eagles as they went up 2-1 on the match.
Set Four:
  • The two teams would trade three to four point runs in set four. Cornerstone would lead at the midway point, 14-10 again with David Galanes recording a service ace.
  • A Pilot attack error helped increase that lead to 16-11 as it looked like CU had all the momentum.
  • Bethel responded with a 5-1 run after a timeout to get back in the set, 19-16.
  • David Galanes and Patrick Voloch recorded back-to-back kills to put CU in the driver's seat again at 23-19. Bethel would use their second timeout at this point.
  • After the timeout, Bethel rattled off five straight points in the blink of an eye to create set point of their own.
  • A Brunno Peres kill got CU out of the first and second set points, but Cornerstone could not survive the third as the Pilots won 27-25 to force a fifth set.
Set Five:
  • In the fifth and final set, Cornerstone took a 6-3 advantage behind a 4-0 run. Brunno Peres went off, recording three consecutive kills in the run.
  • After a timeout, Bethel recorded a kill, block, and ace to tie the set at six all.
  • David Galanes helped CU get three straight points back with a pair of kills that put the Golden Eagles on top 10-7.
  • The Pilots refused to quit however with Mustafa Yildiz recording a block that put BU back within one at 11-10.
  • The kill leader Brunno Peres would close the night out though, scoring the final two points on the attack to give CU the 15-13 set five victory as they won 3-2 on the match.
