Women's Basketball gets the victory over Lawrence Tech 65-54

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Women's Basketball got the needed victory over Lawrence Tech 65-54. Cornerstone took the lead early and controlled the rest of the game, responding to every run the Blue Devils had. Stephanie Ainsworth had a monster game where she grabbed a career high 21 rebounds as Mackenzie Stien chipped in a team high 15 points and seven rebounds to help Cornerstone in the victory. The Golden Eagles will travel to Concordia for the first round of the WHAC Tournament on Wednesday, February 22. 
 

Game Highlights:

·       First Quarter

o   Stephanie Ainsworth got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles scoring back-to-back layups to give Cornerstone the early 4-2 lead.

o   Cornerstone and Lawrence Tech are off to slow starts as the game is tied 8-8 after the layup made by Kaitlyn Cain with just under five-minutes remaining in the first quarter.

o   Olivia Kubik scores four-straight points for Cornerstone to retake the lead 14-12 with 1:49 remaining in the quarter.

o   Cornerstone leads Lawrence Tech 14-12 after the first quarter, with both teams shooting under 30% for the game.

·       Second Quarter

o   Mackenzie Stien has the only basket so far in the second quarter as Cornerstone leads 16-12 with seven-minutes remaining in the second quarter.

o   Cornerstone has the largest lead of the game so far as Mackenzie Stien completes the three-point play to make it 20-14.

o   Lawrence Tech used a little run to make it a three-point game, 22-19 with 3:52 remaining in the quarter.

o   Cornerstone used the last 3:52 to go on a 9-0 run to lead 31-19 at halftime. Olivia Kubik leads the way with eight points with Mackenzie Stien right behind her with seven. Stephanie Ainsworth has already brought down nine rebounds to lead the way for both teams.

·       Third Quarter

o   So far Lawrence Tech has the only made field goal in the third quarter as it is a 32-22 Cornerstone lead with 7:37 remaining in the quarter.

o   A three by Jaylee Long extends the Cornerstone lead 38-23 after a three-point play by Mackenzie Stien.

o   The pressure of the Lawrence Tech press has caused Cornerstone to speed up a little bit, causing turnovers that the Blue Devils have taken advantage of. Cornerstone leads 41-31.

o   Cornerstone closed out the quarter at the free-throw line as they lead 44-37 at the end of the third.

·       Fourth Quarter

o   Olivia Kubik's layup capped a three-minute 6-0 run that saw Cornerstone extend their lead back to thirteen as it is 50-37.

o   Lawrence Tech has continued to try and use their pressure to disrupt the flow of the game for the Golden Eagles as it is back to a ten-point game 53-43.

o   Lawrence Tech has gone on a 7-2 run to make it a five-point game, 55-50 with 2:02 remaining in the fourth.

o   The Long sisters have scored the last four points for Cornerstone as Jaylee Long makes two free throws and Jaxi Long makes a nice move and finish for a layup, making it a 61-52 game with one-minute remaining.

o   Cornerstone would close the game strong thanks to a closing basket by Stephanie Ainsworth, as the Golden Eagles would win 65-54.

 

By the Numbers

21 – Stephanie Ainsworth recorded a career high 21 rebounds, the first time since the 2014/15 season where a women's player recorded 20+ rebounds

15/7 – Mackenzie Stien had a great game scoring 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

21/24 – Cornerstone missed three free-throws, going 21-24 for the game shooting 87.5%

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, February 22 in the WHAC Tournament Quarterfinal at Concordia.
