Men's Volleyball falls in straight sets to rival Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Aquinas got the best of Cornerstone in the crosstown rivalry winning in three sets 25-21, 25-15, 25-20. Aquinas took control of the game early and never looked back only getting better as each set played on as Cornerstone struggled to hit on the offensive side. Patrick Voloch recorded his 1500th assist early in the first set as he continues to build on his milestones at Cornerstone. The Golden Eagles will continue to stay on the road as they travel to Goshen on Friday, March 3 for a 7 p.m. game.
 
Game Highlights: Aquinas – 3 Cornerstone – 0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-20)
 
  • First Set
    • Aquinas and Cornerstone battled to open the first set with Aquinas with the early 6-3 thanks to two service aces.
    • Cornerstone was not able to capitalize on the kick save by Kyi Jagorin as the Saints extend their lead 12-8 early in the first set.
    • Kills by Brunno Peres and the Galanes brothers have brought Cornerstone within two, 15-13 halfway through the first.
    • After a kill by Andrew Galanes and an attack error by Aquinas, Cornerstone now trails 19-18 as the first set has continued to be back-and-forth.
    • The Saints would finish the finish the first set taking advantage of the Cornerstone errors to win 25-21.
  • Second Set
    • Aquinas got off to a hot start in the second set going up 8-2 early thanks to four-straight attack errors by the Golden Eagles thanks to the Saints defense getting big blocks.
    • Landon Waltz gets the big kill for the Golden Eagles to stop the Aquinas run, as the Saints lead 12-5.
    • A long rally ends in the favor of the Golden Eagles thanks to a booming kill by David Galanes. Landon Waltz would add another kill as well but Aquinas still leads18-11.
    • Andrew Galanes added a service trying to give Cornerstone a little run late in the second set, as Cornerstone is down 21-13.
    • Saints would finish the set with a service ace and a kill by Joshua Boothroyd to win set two 25-15.
  • Third Set
    • Cornerstone used two-services aces, one by Patrick Voloch and David Galanes to get up 3-1 early.
    • Aquinas takes the lead thanks to kills by their big hitters in Julian Armendano and Joshua Boothroyd 7-6.
    • Aquinas continues to build off the Cornerstone mistakes as Aquinas continues to lead 15-12 after another kill by Aremendano.
    • Another long rally went Aquinas's way, but the hustle plays by Max Hernandez and Patrick Voloch did not go unnoticed giving Cornerstone every opportunity to score. Cornerstone used a timeout after Aquinas grew their lead to 20-17 late in the third set.
    • Aquinas finished the set strong using kills by their big hitters to win 25-20 and the game 3-0.
