Men's Volleyball makes a splash in their first ever WHAC Tournament with a four set victory over MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio.  – The Golden Eagles soar high above Mount Vernon Nazarene University's Cougars, as they fly past them in four sets. Cornerstone saw a tough battle in the first set end in their favor, as they put the first set to bed 25-22. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, Mount Vernon was able to feed off some home field advantage, to win the second set 25-14. But the Golden Eagles fought back, seeing the next two sets come to a close 25-14, and 26-24, respectively. Cornerstone University will look ahead to their next WHAC Tournament matchup against nationally ranked (13) Lourdes University on March 31, set to start at 7:30 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Ind. at the home of the Indiana Tech Warriors. 
 
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3 Mount Vernon – 1 (25-22, 14-25, 25-14, 26-24) 
  • Set One
    • David Galanes gets the game started off with a kill from the left-side, to score Cornerstone's first ever WHAC Tournament point. Followed by his brother, Andrew Galanes to put Cornerstone up 2-0. 
    • An attack error and another kill from Andrew Galanes gives the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead. 
    • A reception error by the Golden Eagles sees their lead slip away, as the Cougars start to catch up 5-4. 
    • Andrew Galanes gets a kill off of the block to give Cornerstone the lead 10-9. 
    • Joshua Beaumont gets 2 kills in a row to build Cornerstone's lead even more, 15-11. 
    • Mount Vernon goes up by 2 late in the first set 19-17, on an attack error by the Golden Eagles. 
    • Andrew Galanes tools another kill off the block, keeping Cornerstone in the set 19-20. 
    • A kill from Landon Waltz, an attack error from the Cougars, and a block from Hubert Sliwinksi and Patrick Voloch give Cornerstone set point 24-21. 
    • A kill through the block from David Galanes finishes the first set. Cornerstone win 25-22. 
  • Set Two
    • Continuing to kill off the block, Andrew Galanes ties the match 2-2, assisted by sophomore setter Patrick Voloch. 
    • Andrew Galanes kills the ball once again the keep Cornerstone in the match down 8-5. 
    • A Mount Vernon service error brings the Golden Eagles within five points of the Cougars, who lead 15-10. 
    • Patrick Voloch records another assist, as David Galanes smashes the ball into the court, in an attempt the regain momentum as the Golden Eagles trail 21-13. 
    • Cornerstone is never able to bounce back during the second set and lose 25-14. 
  • Set Three
    • Cornerstone go on a 3-0 run to begin the third set, setting the tone of the game early on. 
    • A kill from outside hitter, David Galanes, and an attack error by the Cougars sees Cornerstone with a 9-2 lead early in the third set. 
    • The errors are hurting Mount Vernon. Four errors, almost all in a row, put Cornerstone up 12-2. Ultimately leading the Cougars into their second timeout of the set. 
    • Two more kills from junior outside hitter David Galanes, give the Golden Eagles an 11-point lead 19-8. 
    • Joshua Beaumont gets a kill in the third set, keeping Cornerstone in the lead 21-10. 
    • Landon Waltz's kill brings Cornerstone within 1 point of winning the set. As the Golden Eagles go up 24-14. 
    • Mount Vernon Nazarene cannot escape the errors this set, which ultimately is their downfall, as 1 more error closes out the set. Cornerstone win 25-14. 
  • Set Four 
    • The Mount Vernon Cougars go on an early 4-0 run in the fourth set, they lead 9-6. 
    • Two kills from David Galanes, both assisted by Patrick Voloch, help tie the set 14-14. 
    • A service ace by the Cougars sees them retake the lead 16-15 midway through the fourth set. 
    • Two kills by Andrew Galanes, and another from his brother David Galanes, see the Golden Eagles to a 3-point lead 20-17 late in the fourth set. 
    • A decisive kill by outside hitter David Galanes, brings Cornerstone within 2 points of winning the entire match. The Golden Eagles lead 24-23 
    • David Galanes's kill and Mount Vernon's error, sees Cornerstone win their first ever WHAC Tournament match. The final set ends 26-24 Cornerstone University. 
 
By the Numbers  
23 – David Galanes records 23 total kills during this four-set match, the highest of both teams. 44 attempts puts Galanes's hitting percentage at .341, as his 23 kills were a decisive factor in the away upset against the Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene. 
38 – Patrick Voloch grabs 38 more assists to add to his more than 2000 total assists in just two years at Cornerstone University.
5 – Joshua Beaumont totals 5 blocks against the Cougars, tied for the most blocks during this conference tournament matchup. 
 
What's Next?  
Cornerstone looks ahead, after this important away upset, to another conference tournament match versus Lourdes University, on March 31, starting at 7:30 p.m. The Game will be hosted by the Indiana Tech Warriors in Fort Wayne, Ind.
